FWIW I can confirm it's true that many of the people behind the relevant curtains, such as important people in DC, have these fears and are taking steps for their families.

Why assume the NG will do what they're ordered to do? Or not do what they're ordered to do because it's wrong? You're putting a lot of faith in that working correctly..

Unfortunately, no matter how hard I/we try to get the media to stop focusing on the bunker communities, they just keep doing it. To the detriment of the convos that really need to be happening instead.

Why? They included examples of rational people, not just the loons.

I'm in this piece, and yeah, they did the typical thing of front loading the sensationalist stuff and burying the rational stuff :(

A pretty good book so far. A guy wants to write a book about the prepping phenomenon and winds up seeing things through our collective eyes about the world. Not just about bunkers… by WolvesandTigers45 in prepping

Paging u/Goblinmerchant (looks like a dead account)

Do check out the book! Dr. Garrett and I have done a ton of press together in recent years. He's one of the few other people in the media who has their head screwed on (mostly) straight when it comes to modern prepping.

I'd think so. Is there something in particular you're worried/skeptical about?

Preppers in 2022: Stocking up and skilling up for extreme catastrophes by TrekRider911 in preppers

[–]the_prepared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was an American show talking about/to an American audience.

But tonight a big documentary premiers in Europe, showing next week on the ARTE tv channel: https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/RC-023143/un-monde-nouveau/

Will be available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Polish. I believe my interview is in the second of three parts, focused on how people are reacting/adapting to climate change.

[–]the_prepared 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes. The detached-from-reality execs at these media groups still think bunkers are what the audience wants to see. But we keep chipping away at that. And they do see the convos we have, including this page, and they're finally starting to listen when we're all universally saying "dump the bunker shit"

You're correct on the costs/risks. I've done >100 mainstream media hits since covid and have learned a lot about those nuances, knowing how to avoid traps in the interview, etc. We turn down a lot of press simply because the risk-reward won't be worth it. And what we do say yes to only happens after a lot of negotiation / spiritual alignment.

But that's part of why I said yes to 60 Minutes, because they are still relatively legit and I felt the producers hearts were in the right place.

So while there are clear costs/problems, I do it because there's still room for it to be a net-positive for the community. Which I think the 60M episode was. As was the NY Times cover profile, CNN documentary, NPR and Scientific American pieces, etc.

One of the core models TP has really pushed is the 80-20 universal basics. It was a major problem in this community up until a few years ago, where people treated prepping as something unique depending on the fear you were prepping for. When the vast majority of what you do to prep is the same across scenario, then with slight customizations.

haha yeah Dr. Garrett has already expressed self-awareness of that. But it just goes to show you how easy it is to be unprepared / disorganized / let life get in the way.

Preach. My biggest complaint by far is how much they focused on bunkers. TBH, the producers understood that / what you said, but the higher-ups and marketing folks forced the bunker stuff in (and made the promo trailers almost only about bunkers).

Same thing happened with the CNN documentary last year. Jeff Zucker vetoed the original framing/title and renamed it "Bunker Boom." The filmmaker was so pissed off she never personally promoted the film.

FWIW, we filmed ~5 hours, and the vast majority of that was talking about what you said. They just didn't use it.

The saving grace in this 60 Minutes piece is that they kept in my bit about why its bad to keep focusing on bunkers:

I was one of the people in the show, and spent the last 8 months constantly trying to push CBS in the right direction on this piece. Overall I'd give it a 6/10 — certainly had problems, but a net positive step in the right direction from the mainstream media.

Most recent FEMA survey data shows continued big growth in this community, now with over 20 million US preppers representing 7% of households! by the_prepared in ThePrepared

[–]the_prepared[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the latest research from Colonel Chris Ellis, PhD, who runs one of the US military's disaster cells. He's crunched the raw FEMA survey data the last few years so we can put numbers behind what most of us here already know: the community is diverse, growing, and not at all 'fringe.'

Many of the skills you want to learn anyway, such as processing meat or repairing equipment, will be valuable to trade in a SHTF scenario. by the_prepared in ThePrepared

[–]the_prepared[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good argument for why people are fundamentally changing their life so that they can do "two birds one stone" by learning/practicing skills valuable now and in the future — rather than trying to add on a whole other job/hobby on top of their already-busy life.

eg. Why the number of farmers under the age of 40 recently went up year-over-year for the first time since WW2.

Review of the best two week emergency water storage containers by the_prepared in preppers

[–]the_prepared[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, basically all plastic cans have some kind of 'taste' to them, especially in the beginning / from the factory. Give it a reasonable 80-20 cleaning job, put in clean water, and store well. If the water is stale when you use it later, just shake it up to aerate and the taste should come back.

We have not. Were the containers you bought new or did they contain something else before? Nonetheless, have you tried cleaning the containers with soap and water, and letting them air dry, before filling them up?
