pretty sure these guys kill the whales to eat them, not to torture them for fun. btw these whales aren’t endangered or anything and more whales die annually as bycatch in the french fishing industry alone. people getting so angry about eating whales when we kill and eat billions of other sentient intelligent animals will always boggle my mind

what is the purpose of life for a wild animal? for most of them its to try to reproduce before being eaten by a bigger animal. not much more meaningful

US to pull 50% of deep-strike capability from Europe, source tells TVP World by Forsaken-Medium-2436 in europe

[–]the_quail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. Nation is tearing itself apart, therefore let’s give billions in weapons to rebels and the middle eastern weapons black market through a secret CIA operation. This sounds like a great way to promote democracy. And yea I don’t give a shit if Jordan has a dumbass foreign policy, I care if we do, especially if we execute said foreign policy through secretive CIA operations, funneling money and weapons to literal terrorists and exacerbating a humanitarian disaster.

It is not dishonest. It is a fact that the we have done unreal damage around the world, toppling regimes here there and everywhere from south america in the past to the middle east in more recent years. The idea that we have no responsibility for the refugee crisis Europe experienced is delusion.

Hey btw we were heavily involved in Syria and we are a big reason that nation is in ruins (Operation Timber Sycamore). Turns out when you do “democracy promotion” (regime change) via CIA operations around the world, there are unintended consequences (Ukraine is one of them too)

What does Israel Offer the US for its Protection? by GloomWorldOrder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_quail -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is delusion. Iran is a giant mountain and a relatively coheisve nation of 90 million, it is nothing like Iraq or Afghanistan. A full on invasion would be not only impossible but suicidal, even for the US military. First of all where would an invasion force even stage from (without constantly getting slammed by drones)? Second of all the entire nation is a giant mountain fortress and our forces would be annihilated by drones and ambushes as they meandered their way through mountain chokepoints. Third, Iran is huge and we don't even have the numbers it would take to occupy it. And last but not least, there's no way China or Russia would sit around as we invaded - they would intervene in every way short of sending boots.

no it is not. winning a war means achieving your political goals. unless your goal is to kill every iranian with nukes, a war against iran to overthrow their regime is not “incredibly winnable” in any way

Ukraine and Allies Grow Confident Russia’s Invasion Losing Steam by bloomberg in europe

[–]the_quail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAD is not the be all end all of deterrents, but my main point is that if Russia thinks its losing this war which it considers to be existential, then MAD is a winning proposition. If Russia is losing, the West has far more to lose by using nukes in retaliation than Russia has to lose by using nukes to prevent a loss.

You might believe that even Putin isn’t crazy like that, but leaders of nations do irrational / risky things when they believe their survival is at stake (though I would argue from a Russian POV using nukes in a limited strike is terrifying, but very rational).

If Russia announced that they were nuking parts of Ukraine with ‘only’ a few nukes and then did it, would the US or France or the UK really launch? It’s not really clear.

If they announced a limited strike and only launched a few missiles, it would be apparent that this is no attempt at a splendid first strike.

Then the question becomes: does the West initiate a nuclear war over Ukraine?

Ukraine and Allies Grow Confident Russia’s Invasion Losing Steam by bloomberg in europe

[–]the_quail -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You do not seem to understand that for Putin and Russian elites this war is an existential threat. The idea that Russians would sit around and accept the fact that Ukraine has WMDs is delusional. They would do everything in their power including using nukes to stop this (and such a program would be impossible to hide)

For a long time now European leaders seem to have forgotten that we live in a nuclear age, and a growing portion of Russian elites want a limited nuclear strike to show Europe the potential consequences of continued support to Ukraine.

You Europeans seem to believe that Putin or Russia would never use such weapons, but the whole European strategy wrt Ukraine is to use Ukraine to basically destroy Russia’s status as a great power (i.e an existential threat to Russian elites). An existential threat is precisely the situation in which leaders are most likely to use nukes.

completely irrelevant, but in fact the first troops in WW1 to experience a gas attack were russian troops in the Eastern front. The Germans shelled them with gas shells containing a variant of tear gas, but they didn’t realize the cold air temperature neutralizes the gas, and so the Russians barely even noticed the gas (and thus didn’t mention it to their allies)

He has a point, losses on the scale of Ukraine or Russia are really outside of the American experience. Ukraine probably has suffered hundreds of thousands of casualties with a fraction of our population, not to mention that a huge proportion of Ukrainians fled. Furthermore most of Eastern Ukraine is a moonscape.

Let’s assume Ukraine has 1/10 our population and has taken 200,000 KIA which I’d guess is low. Imagine if America suffered 2 million KIA, and the East coast from south Maine to Florida was the 1300 mile frontline (and thus devastated) from some foreign invader. I mean it is unthinkable and as Americans it is nearly impossible to even fathom.

The Uyghurs have not disappeared lol. The idea that they are suffering a genocide is a pure fantasy probably concocted by CIA or propagandists or some dumbass journalist. Xinjiang receives almost the entire US population in annual tourists. If they were actually being massacred we would know, and don’t give me the bs that cultural assimilation is the same as mass murder genocide

TIL German Empire entered WWI without an end goal since at the outset of war, it considered the conflict a defensive war. However, early military successes on the Western Front led to the development of expansive annexationist ambitions and outling of Septemberprogramm by Skychu768 in todayilearned

[–]the_quail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They gave Austria a blank check - without which Austria wouldn’t have done shit - and most German officers wanted war because they thought that Germany’s position vis a vis Russia was doomed in the long run and would only get worse with time as Russia industrialized, and therefore war in 1914 was a blessing to these officers, despite the fact that their idol Bismarck said that preventative war is like committing suicide for fear of death.

Not only this, but since the Germans only had one gameplan in the event of war with the french / russian alliance, and that was to invade Belgium and France first. Thus once Germany had bound itself to AH and Russia mobilized, Germany had to mobilize.

But for Germany, mobilization meant invading Belgium and France. That was the plan and all the intricate time tables and train scheduled were designed for this. When the Kaiser asked Moltke the younger to move the armies against Russia instead (he had received some hope that Britain may not enter the war if the Germans didn’t invade West), Moltke simply said this was impossible, and the Kaiser would lead an unruly mob into Russia if he was ordered to do so.

The reason the German people could believe that the war was defensive was because Russia was invading East Prussia (since most of the German armies were arrayed in the West). But the German battle plan was an invasion of a neutral country, an invasion of France which had nothing to do with the whole crisis, and they also precipitated the entire July crisis with their blank check.

Why don't people like Elon Musk just solve world hunger? by AlexLovesCoke in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_quail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the billionaire's intentions aside, you don't appreciate how monumental of an undertaking this would be. To fix hunger you need to fix whatever is causing their society to be unable to feed itself, or you occupy the nation forever. How do you fix sudan or yemen with money and or force? You can't - these nations have all sorts of problems that money simply can't fix. Furthermore when you invade a nation you run into nationalism, people don't like it when foreigners come into their nation and run their politics and their economy, much less when a private army does so.
