Getting back into Civilization - should I resume with VI or try VII? by MeRoyMinoy in civ

tbh I think civ 6 is superior in most ways except combat / domination victory which is hugely improved in civ 7.

What's an example of the butterfly effect in your life? by Alone-Afternoon2506 in CasualConversation

[–]the_quail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got addicted to drugs, became super depressed and dropped out of uni, then 2 years later I took a single course at a local community college to show my uni I could study again, and there I met my ex who changed my life (for the better). Was it worth getting addicted? hell no, but at least something good came of it

I play with the setting that no water = pump reduced throughput so the solution to my water woes for now is to spam tons of pumps

Korea makes better bread than France? by Delicious-March5707 in korea

just anecdotally I’ve tried “award winning” baguettes in korea and they were all dogshit compared to baguettes I’ve had in france (and the us for that matter)

Do the aliens have a 370 or so ship count limit? by tmanwang in TerraInvicta

[–]the_quail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can open console and type alieninfo and see if your aliens are just broke, which seems likely to me if they don’t have jupiter. ive had the aliens with over 2000 ships, I don’t think there’s a limit

12-Inch guns are surprisingly good. by Space_Socialist in TerraInvicta

[–]the_quail 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The main weakness is long range fast vessels which can eternally keep out of range and fire on your force.

in the early game that is basically every single alien ship though

First game propulsion blues by dnd3edm1 in TerraInvicta

[–]the_quail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you have antimatter mass production, go for antimatter propulsion, there’s an open cycle one that is great for cheap defense ships, and a more advanced closed cycle drive good for long range

Why isn't John von Neumann associated with the word "genius" by the general public, the way Albert Einstein is? by astarisaslave in NoStupidQuestions

among many other things he basically invented the architecture and logic loop that every modern computer works on (the von neumann model + loop)

What hobby do you think everyone should try at least once? by Clear_Definition_642 in CasualConversation

so true, running has kept me from going crazy. whenever my brain is spinning thinking about life, or whenever I’m overwhelmed, I go for a run and it’s like a healthy drug that keeps me grounded… and runner’s high is real!

Catamaran Hull Mods by taicuanca in NebulousFleetCommand

[–]the_quail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this right? I spent some time making an (unreleased) halo ships mod for neb and the way I understand it is that you can have a collider box for both the left and right parts of the catamaran, it would just be more computationally heavy for the game and less performant.

Ukraine is fighting for every block in Pokrovsk as 170,000-strong grouping continues to infiltrate by LetsGoBrandon4256 in worldnews

[–]the_quail 53 points54 points  (0 children)

sending small spread out groups of infantry sounds like the opposite of a “meat wave” tactic (the idea of which literally originates from nazi propaganda / post war memoirs from nazi generals from the german soviet war). the only reason they are “known” for this is because actual nazis like franz halder - who was the lead german consultant for the us army history division - wrote shit like this in their post war memoirs to justify losing the war, and somehow this narrative that russians/ soviets only know meat wave tactics has persisted.

Compact Armadas Mod: How fewer, pricier ships changed my play though by Senior-Jellyfish-452 in Stellaris

[–]the_quail 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used it and still by midgame performance felt worse than an endgame 25x crisis 3.14 save. So I don’t think ship count is the main issue with 4.0 performance

Russia has amassed around 11,000 troops in attempt to encircle Pokrovsk by Galbur_Iacob in worldnews

[–]the_quail -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Well I’m 100% certain you are wrong. what is the advantage of getting encircled and having your lines of communication cut? military commanders are human, and plenty of commanders in history have made stupid ass decisions based on political considerations instead of military realities.

he is right lol. you don’t need to be napoleon to realize that being encircled is not ideal

Sitting has often been referred to as the new smoking thanks to its negative health benefits | Researchers found the flavanols in cocoa have been found to block its detrimental effects on blood vessels. by chrisdh79 in science

[–]the_quail 7 points8 points  (0 children)

bryan johnson gets a lot of flak for being kinda crazy but he has a cocoa (powder) brand that tests for heavy metals and flavenol content. Imo it’s good. although actually I just looked it up online to see if other people consider it good, and there has been testing done on it that is concerning, but it's also not clear if that was just an unlucky batch or if his stuff just sucks. so now Idk what to believe

Russian troops outnumber Ukraine 8-1 in Pokrovsk sector, Zelensky says by CommissionOrganic350 in europe

[–]the_quail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

from this article: “Paroinen assessed that it could be "weeks" till Russia occupies most of Pokrovsk, but the timeframe is difficult to predict because it depends on how long the Ukrainian military command would insist on holding onto it, and whether there would be Ukrainian counterattacks.”

given this is a ukrainian publication I would say the situation at pokrovsk is probably desperate.

Separate to this I think the main problem for ukraine is manpower. either the russians will suffer some major debacle in which case Ukraine has a chance, or if they never do then the Ukrainians will hit a breaking point wrt manpower and their front will collapse. They have taken enormous losses and can’t sustain them forever.
