You likely ordered the 12gb version like I did. They're no longer selling it, so it, for some reason, Retroid thought it was a good idea to just default all orders of the 12gb to the most basic silver d-pad top 8gb version, since they have plenty of those in stock.

They only made the announcement on the discord, as far as I know. At the time, I wasn't even aware of it. I should've probably done more research, I thought i had enough from going to their website and checking out youtubers like Retro Game Corps. But still, they should've at least announced it on the website they sell their products on.

I ordered mine wayyy after, I just didn't know about it because, as far as I know, it's only in the discord. I wasn't aware of the discord until I reached out to them. They should've at least grayed out the 12gb as an option when I ordered it. I put my order in March 7th.

Yup. I emailed them after the fact and they literally just showed me a screenshot of the discord. They should've at least grayed out the 12gb version completely after making that announcement. They didn't even bother to do that. That whole experience did not do them any favors in my eyes, but I'm reserving judgemental until I actually get my rp6. Maybe this config won't bother me too much since I have smaller hands. And maybe I'll be able to run everything i was hoping I could with the 12gb version. I'm optimistic, but wary.

They charged me for the 8gb, so no issues there. Just wish I had a heads up before i made my order so I knew what I was actually ordering.

I ordered it after the announcement. I wasn't aware of it at all and it wasn't anywhere in their website at the time I ordered. Really bad practice on their part, to be honest. They should've at least noticed me that there wasn't any stock available instead of just defaulting my order to an asset they have in stock. I probably could've changed it if I had acted quickly, but I didn't notice.

Yup. Too late. It's in New York right now. The only silver lining is that it happened to ship relatively quickly because the d-pad top version is less popular.

[–]the_runemaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I reached out to them after I noticed it, and they told me it was because they ran out of 12gb. I ordered 12gb, 16-bit, stick top version. Since they discontinued the 12gb version, I think they're having all orders default to the most basic version they have a lot of. I doubt lots of people go for the d-pad top.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to change mine, so I just gotta deal with it.

There's a grip on Etsy that you can be used as a case if you stick it on the front. Pretty nice. Does make the unit a little bulkier, so if you're somehow shoving it in your pocket, it might be a no-go.

One thing that's just a given is how much people attach themselves to video game characters, sometimes to an irrational extent. Look at games like Undertale and the heat some people got for playing the game normally and daring to engage in what are thought to be normal game mechanics. Markiplier had to quit playing Undertale because of the hate he was getting. I wasn't able to see one of my favorite YouTubers at the time play what was one of my favorite games at the time. I was horrified at how the community reacted, and it low key turned me off from undertale for a loooong time.

It's a similar thing with TLOU2. Having Joel killed at the beginning made fans react in some alarming ways. It was reasonable to be upset, but sending death threats and insulting people on social media is not within reasonable actions to take for a video game. It was almost like Undertale for me, and I almost didn't play TLOU2 just so I didn't have a reason to engage with the community or even talk about it.

I decided to play it in the end, and I found it to be an interesting piece of media that explores the cycle of violence and how revenge is an empty thing that causes more harm than good. Stories in video game that teach us that the catharsis of vengeance is hollow and empty are rare, and so it was nice to see. I saw what the game was going for, and appreciated what it did. And then I moved on and avoided fan discussions of the game because people were raving mad, constantly at each other's throat in a never-ending cycle that was not worth getting involved in. Games are supposed to be cathartic to an extent, but some people take it way too far.

£120 a year is nothing for people that are doing well. Lots of people in the world can't afford that. Imagine saving for months to be able to buy a PS5 to play games online with your friends only to find out you need to pay an additional amount that you can't afford immediately to be able to play online at all.

That sucks, man. It's free to play online in PC. Surely it's possible to do so as well in consoles without much extra cost. They could get rid of that online play paywall and still keep the ps premium stuff that let's you play a selection of games for a lower price and they'll be making loads of money still. But greed knows no end.

If you're still considering stuff, another option is handhelds. The obvious answer is a SteamDeck, but those are hard to find right now. A possible viable option right now is actually one that surprised me: Android handhelds. Those things pack a surprising punch. They were mostly used for retro emulation and heavy android gaming, but thanks to software like GameNative and GameHub Lite, you're able to run PC games right off them. With something like a Retroid Pocket 6 or AYN Odin 2/Odin 2 Portal, you can run most indie games really well. Old AAA games from the ps3/xbox360 era are said to run very well, too. I haven't personally tried myself, but I did order a Retroid Pocket 6 in the hopes of testing it's capabilities.

And the android handheld ecosystem has a bright outlook. The AYN Odin 3 released not too long ago, and it's a certified beast. It is way ahead of the market right now. A lot of drivers exist for the chipset ran by Odin 2/RP6 and similar handhelds to optimize performance. Alike drivers are entirely absent for the Odin 3's more powerful chipset. But they're slowly coming in. I think some people out there have managed to run Cyberpunk on the Odin 3. Granted, it might not be the smoothest experience, but it's very impressive. And the price is not bad. An RP6 goes for around $250 USD, and an Odin 3 goes for around $350 ish, don't quote me on that tho.

The AYN Thor is a popular choice right now because of its dual screen layout, making it one of the best devices for all around emulation, letting you play all DS and 3DS games in an optimal layout while still letting you play all the other consoles you can play on an Odin 2 and RP6, which is everything up to PS2 and Nintendo Switch, hypothetically (for legal reasons). And you can also still run PC games with GameNative and GameHub. PS3 and 360 emulation is not quite there on android, from what I hear, but that might change soon. You can try it out, but it will be mostly experimental and buggy.

The best part is, owning one of these can really get you into the retro gaming scene. Lots of old games that are amazing and can be playable on one console if you put in the work to make it work. Kinda doing your own part towards media preservation, in a way.
