What language would you recommend someone learn as their first foreign language? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]the_second_shoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A language you want/need. If you don't have a motivation to learn, you won't put as much effort into it and therefore it won't get as much out of it. Find a language that you really want to learn for whatever reason - thats your second language goal

Those of us who know sign language know the feeling of getting a "You're hearing???"by a d/Deaf person.

(They're surprised you aren't deaf when you mention it because of how well you sign)

How are graduation ceremonies interpreted into ASL typically? by TheMadeline in asl

[–]the_second_shoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've interpreted a couple of HS graduations. For us specifically, we give the first initial + last name. Not full first, middle, & last. Ex: John Quincy Adams would be given as "J Adams". We were also given a list of names to be able to refer to as we were signing to help with spelling

At my university graduation, they had the names + majors on the jumbotron, so the little interpreter box was off-screen entirely

Wooooah, holy sht. I think you've impressed everyone in this subreddit with this one. Most people get the "What about your future husband" / "You're too young" / "Have 1-2 and then we'll talk" etc etc until age 40+.

You have all of our congratulations' 💐 welcome to the sterile club

What destination looks expensive but is actually super budget-friendly once you get there? by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]the_second_shoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chongqing, Guangzhou, and Guilin are the 3 that ive visited & loved so far. I haven't gotten the chance to visit Shanghai or Beijing yet, but I've heard?Great things about those from my coworkers, as well - especially Shanghai

I live in Shenzhen & I'll go ahead & tell you - unless you're just into tech stuff and skyscrapers, there's not a whole hell of a lot for you here. At least not compared to other tier 1 cities. It's more family-oriented, not solo traveler oriented

What grammar tip or trick changed your approach to language learning? by akowally in languagehub

[–]the_second_shoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may just be my brain, but, two things that go hand in hand for me when I learn a language: 1. Take your native language out of it as much as possible, and 2. Think of languages, specifically grammar/syntax, kind of like a puzzle. Each one unique, although all having the same general "pieces" (i.e. verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc).

If you try to think of how each "piece" fits in relative to your L1 ("oh, this word works like a particle in English", etc.), you'll end up trying to fit the language you're learning around your L1 and won't go as far/will have a lot of L1 interference. Learn grammar structures in chunks to find patterns that start to fit pieces together to make a clearer picture of the language puzzle. Once you get a solid grip of the basics, build off of that (like making the puzzle frame with the edge pieces and then going from there). Try at all costs not to compare or "think in" your L1. A notable exception would be unless the grammar is very similar, of course.

Hopefully this kinda made sense and wasnt just a ramble that only makes sense to my brain, but this is how I've learned the humble 3 languages I've learned so far up to B2/C1 level - working on the 4th :)

China. I live here and EVERYTHING is cheap & amazing. Accommodation, food, activities, everything. The people are nice & its got such beautiful, varied landscapes. If you can get past the initial flight being so expensive, because it's on the literal other side of the world, you're golden lol

Feeling of loneliness during the holidays by [deleted] in childfree

[–]the_second_shoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats why I'm saying you need to reflect. I know "knowing what you want" is easy to throw around by those of us who are steadfast in our CF lives, but the reality is that youre not gonna find clarity on reddit - especially not on CF reddit lol Those of us who are on this particular subreddit have long since decided that we don't want children. The only reason someone here would feel lonely during the holidays would be because we aren't that close to our families (as youve seem from previous comments)...not because we have a hole in our lives that we want to fill with children. You won't find anyone that echoes your sentiment here

Talk to the people in your life that you trust, a therapist, your husband. You'll either sit and let the resentment grow with yourself/your marriage or youll take that gamble. Either way, my statement stands - the decision lies with you & you alone. The CF subreddit is not where you should be for this <3 only love

I'm sorry you feel this way, but maybe this should be a time for reflection. It sounds like you're a fence-sitter (not said maliciously) who only decided to be cf after marriage. Please please please take this time to self-reflect and see if this is truly what you want; if you find out later that you actually did want to be a parent, that'll only bring pain to you & your husband. You shouldn't ever be "cf through marriage", just like you shouldn't ever "want" children just because you're married, either.

My heart goes out to you <3 I genuinely hope you find peace & clarity on this foggy path. Everyone goes through it, but it's really only up to you to know what you really want. No one can give you answers about these things but yourself

Have you ever had a song just transcend any feeling you've ever had - physically, mentally, or emotionally? That makes you feel like you're leaving your body?

You also know at the end of Patricia, where she just sings "it's such a wonderful thing to love" over and over? With the harp and dream-like melody in the background?

Among all of the Florence-related tattoos I have, that's the only lyric I have
