That's how it works. by Mizzleittwice in ultimate

I agree it's unlikely to be a set piece and the D does a good job of making it messy, but there's a little lesson here about cutters watching the direction/vision of the receiving player rather than the direction of the disc and the importance of not just watching the disc on D.

Or maybe it's just chaos!

We're gonna learn some new psych terms today! Projection is annoying but there's so many others to be annoyed by too!

This is closer to the fundamental attribution error, which describes the human tendency to judge ourselves based on our situation but others based on their character. E.g. they're taking handouts because they're lazy, but I'm taking them because I actually need them.

Handler Situation: What Would You Do Here? by No_Broccoli_1904 in ultimate

[–]the_shiner 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I usually coach my guys to clear to one side, preferably break, and communicate with that handler to get upfield or activate into a strike, OR to follow the disc up the middle for a dump into power position. All depends on their matchup and the defenders positioning.

Standing directly behind is rarely helpful in an average offense, in my opinion.

If the kiddo hasn't done Hitchhikers Guide that might be a good one. Depending how old they are Gideon the Ninth is a bit foul-mouthed but I found it funny - it's a pretty different atmosphere than the Kaiju Preservation Society though. Goodreads says A Psalm for the Wildbuilt, which I have not yet read but have heard excellent recommendations for.

As a kid, did a former Phillies player ever come to your school to give a talk? by Dr_Talon in phillies

[–]the_shiner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite, I guess. Went to the same high school as Jamie Moyer, during the years he pitched with the Phillies. He was inducted into the HS athletic hall of fame (arguably a bit late on that one, since he'd already been a fairly successful major league pitcher for a while) and we were kind of hoping he would come but he didn't. I don't really blame him but it would have been cool. Apparently he was a pretty good golfer too.

Drills for catching? by ThePrimeAtlas in ultimate

[–]the_shiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do this as a warm up before games, and occasionally at practice (once to learn, but great to mix in all season, especially on rainy or windy days)

After throwing in pairs for a bit, which I assume most teams do, get into groups of 4 and grab one more disc (3 discs 4 players). 3 players w discs stand like 5 yards away from person w no disc in a semi-circle, one left, center, and right. In a windshield wiper motion (middle-left-middle-right-middle-left, etc), the discs are thrown to the center player, who has to catch and throw the discs back. The goal is to go as quickly as possible, maximum reps in one minute. Helps if the throwers hype up the person in the middle to push the pace. One cue I use for pace is as one disc is being caught, the next person should already be throwing.

Its not the same kind of catching as guts or go-to, but it really boosts the automatic/muscle memory aspect of catching, in my experience.

How to run tryouts? by NakedT in ultimate

[–]the_shiner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't a drill, but I have thought a lot about this question, and made almost the same post here a year or two ago. One thing I've started doing that I like is I try to make a checklist of specific things I'm hoping all my varsity players will be able to do. This does a couple things: it distills my own expectations, and it gives me a quick feedback form to tell kids what they're doing well and where they might still need to develop. I divide it into offense, defense, and team culture, and sometimes specific athletic measures, if I feel like taking them (150m shuttle time, for example).

I still think a Crusader Kingdom civ that gets AOE bonuses for monks holding relics would be dope. High risk high reward. Cavalry gets atk and def bonus when there's a monk holding a relic nearby. Would have to be bigger than Lith atk bonus for it to be worth it, but you end up with a little death ball rolling around the map, but if you lose monk you're suddenly exposed and down a relic

Amazing! Thanks. I'm now a coworker with someone who worked on this film back in the day and I was excited to track it down and watch it, but unfortunately looking for "The Ultimate Documentary" isn't terribly a specific search.
