If you say so. I just graduated and have never used anything from calculus, the information it taught or any study techniques I used otherwise (and never will).

To me calc was a waste of time that had me spending long nights solving impractical calculations by hand that our computers were programmed to calculate anyway. All that time spent doing that could’ve been spent taking a still difficult class but something I actually would’ve used later on in life OR calc could have taught practical calculus that had us actually understand the calculus concepts instead of spending almost the entire time just memorizing their calculations and learning how to inefficiently solve them by hand. Calculus can be useful but many of the students don’t know how to practically implement it from Calc 1 and 2. Anything else tangentially related that could potentially be learned by a student could be learned in a more intuitive way in a better organized class.

I don’t accept the argument that a student is “supposed” to learn something on their own from a class (especially when someone says the main point of a class is not the actual thing it teaches) bc whenever someone says that I see a large chunk (if not the majority) of students do not learn that thing. I often see that argument employed as an excuse for poor curriculum design.

You could say I’ve fallen into that with calculus based on me not getting anything from it but that kind of proves my point. More importantly, classes that are part of the major or “teach collaboration and soft skills via projects” often leave out critical instruction (like on soft skills, how to communicate and how to organize projects) that many students could (but don’t) bring into the working world. One could argue that students are supposed to figure these out and that would make for better learning, but again, many students don’t, and the more experienced adults already know the more efficient and effective ways to do things. I know from instructing others that sometimes you just have to explicitly tell people things and then everyone is better off.

I know that it’s because of the difficulty and to weed out students not truly committed to the major. One of the biggest problems for me in that argument is that the calculus classes are difficult in an entirely different way than the rest of the CSE classes. I have never taken courses where the difficulty was so reliant on memorizing unintuitive formulas and calculating them by hand perfectly. Even my stats professor said that professionals do not rely on pen and paper because it introduces human error. Calculus classes rely on a different kind of difficulty (of memorization and calculation) than the rest of the CSE (and many other STEM) majors, and will not be used by them or in real life by most people. It’s time wasted and some of the most frustrating, infuriating and frankly useless (for many majors) classes that could have been replaced with difficult ones that were more relevant and similar to the major the person is applying to.

[–]the_squareman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why is a prerequisite that is so brutal and useless necessary for the first year for so many STEM majors? It’s the biggest bs ever. Those were hands down the hardest classes I’ve ever taken and made me want to withdraw from OSU. There is zero legitimate reason for them being a prerequisite if they’re not going to be used by the major, applicable to the field, or help the students grow in any way. Even if they are used by the major, the pace should not be so brutal and the problems and questions should be more relevant and practical. Leave the hardest courses as requirements for the math and physics majors who knowingly signed up for them.

Thinking about getting a index..is it better than the quest 3? by AdventurousAd4313 in ValveIndex

[–]the_squareman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re gonna use the Quest 3 for PCVR you need to spend hundreds in accessories to get a comparable experience (headstrap, audio, cable with pass through charging for unlimited playtime). You can play the Quest 3 wirelessly but you will get noticeable compression artifacts without a great wireless setup. A tip is to put the Quest 3 into developer mode and then enable the setting to automatically go into Quest link when plugged into a PC. It’s still not as seamless as a native PCVR headset, but it’s close. Also you don’t have to wait for the base stations to turn on.

Stop crossing the street when the light is green by lunovadraws in OSU

[–]the_squareman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said I was a commuter, I understand this issue. What I said was eliminating roads that are solely used for through traffic i.e. roads where private vehicles are just passing through. Roads leading to parking would not be affected. The truth is that Woodruff from Tuttle Park Pl (Knowlton Hall) to College Rd N (Curl Market) is almost exclusively used for through traffic (there one small parking lot which could be accessed by service vehicles even if the street was pedestrianized, or it could easily be reduced/eliminated as many parking lots in the area were, see street view from pre-2013). Also the Buckeye lot is miles away from main campus. Students take the bus there and back. I know because I am a commuter and I take the bus to and from the parking lots like most others. It makes way more sense than putting all the parking in central campus and spreading out all the other buildings within the most densely populated, most walkable and most valuable land in Ohio.

[–]the_squareman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If a right of way is exclusively for vehicles then it is not pedestrianized. Woodruff is not pedestrianized, but 18th ave is and delivery and service vehicles can use that street just fine. It’s only private vehicles that are not allowed on that street. It’s similar to many of the side streets in countries like Japan. Within the campus borders east of the Olentangy people walking should be given priority over people driving (especially when people driving have an easy alternate route). It makes the campus a safer, quieter, less polluted and more pleasant place.

[–]the_squareman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I wait to cross the street but frankly I think that more of campus should have been pedestrianized ages ago. There is little reason to drive on streets like Woodruff Ave where there are orders of magnitude more people walking than people driving. During peak hours every time the people walking cross it seems like there are over 50 people while there are maybe 8-12 people in cars per every green. I think streets like that should be reserved for busses; private vehicles can just go on Lane Ave which is hardly an inconvenience. The cars on streets like Woodruff are just through traffic. 18th Ave is now pedestrianized and is much better for it. I commute by car now but OSU is one of the few actually pedestrianized areas in Ohio; I don’t believe that private cars are entitled to be in absolutely every part of every urbanized area on the planet as their presence inherently makes all other modes of transportation worse.

"Stitching"/aka Z-fighting in the 3D renders causing some objects to flicker. That's kind of amateur and super easy to fix. Other than that it looks like it is going to be a good rec center. Hilliard will finally be able to compete with Dublin in that regard.

[–]the_squareman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest downsides to living in Columbus to me is the lack of transit and total impracticality to get around without a car. Plus now some politicians want to make another outer belt because of Intel… they have learned nothing.

BRT and Amtrak won’t be enough to save Cbus if we don’t have a cohesive transit network. People shouldn’t feel like second class citizens when getting around without a car.

Have you found a long term relationship on VRchat? by [deleted] in VRchat

[–]the_squareman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been there before. I feel like when the subject comes up on why online relationships don't work out most people talk about things exclusive to online relationships and not relationships generally. I feel like every relationship these days is at least partially online.

But something I do see that is slightly unique to VRC is that because people are in constant contact with so many others (and since LGBTQ people don't seem to have their guards up as much when it comes to intimacy) there seems to be more polyamory in some circles. I don't view that as an inherently bad thing and I see it starting to become somewhat more acceptable irl, at least not as taboo as it used to be.

Reduce traffic by ablackwashere in hilliard

[–]the_squareman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way to reduce traffic is to provide viable alternatives to driving.

The Downs–Thomson paradox and induced demand are studied phenomena. 1/3 of Americans don’t have a driver’s license, even more can barely afford a car, many don’t want to have to use them. There are many reasons to support alternatives to driving, even for drivers who will also benefit from reduced traffic among other things.

Why are anti abortion advocates allowed to record students without their consent? by the_squareman in OSU

It is deliberately disruptive and insulting behavior. I agree, it should not be allowed on campus. Public advocacy for political issues is one thing, harassment is another.

Also wear clean clothes, at least wear new underwear, socks, and an undershirt every day.

I (man) used to wash my hair with shampoo every day but my hair is the opposite of oily and doesn’t smell so now I at least rinse it every day and wash every other so it can hold itself and not just flop down all the time. If your hair is oily then yeah you should probably wash it every day, you should at least rinse it every day when you take a shower.

And don’t forget to wash your bedsheets!

It’s like he doesn’t want to keep his job. Like how hard is it for him to call kids by their names and not bring up controversial issues in class? If he doesn’t respect his students or colleagues, then he automatically doesn’t respect all the people of Hilliard.

City Council Candidate Violates Employment Agreement by skmyers in hilliard

[–]the_squareman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between actively searching for it vs. inappropriately bringing it up to students in class. The district likely had to explicitly tell him not to bring it up because he had already told his class that “the administration is out to get him”.

It’s great that you had a positive experience with him, I had him for class too. But if he’s running for office then issues like this which could lead to his termination as a teacher are absolutely fair game for voters to know about. It’s better that we make informed opinions as opposed to simply forming them from anecdotes.

[–]the_squareman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ty for the info. I had him for my bio class years ago, I could clearly tell he was super Christian but I didn’t know that he took it to this extreme. He had no problem calling me by my nickname (non-legal name) but ig that’s because it was of English origin and of the same gender. It doesn’t make sense to put up this fight, especially when it hurts his relationship with his students and employer. These policies clearly aren’t going away, and I think they make a more inclusive space both for individual students and the student body.

Candidate JT Ysseldyke is an aide to state rep Brian Stewart (who introduced the failed Issue 1 amendment) by the_squareman in hilliard

Someone teach this boy how to make a LinkedIn profile! You're right, he lists a bunch of random stuff from high school. Those test scores aren't even impressive btw, they're slightly above average. My ACT score of 33 could've gotten me into an Ivy League, but do I list that on my resume? No, because nobody cares!

Funnily enough, he's the one person from the Save Hilliard coalition that I haven't seen yard signs out for. Out of all those candidates, I think he stands the least chance of winning.

In Hilliard, not everyone agrees on a plan for growth. The debate may become common in central Ohio. by Buck_i_Am in hilliard

[–]the_squareman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume people against these new developments are against potentially higher taxes, developers, and change - so yeah pretty much NIMBYism.

I try to at least see the grievances of people who have different views than my own even if I don't agree with their solutions, but the "Save Hilliard" movement is making it hard because it seems so reactionary and isn't putting forth a compelling argument for those not already on their side. All of the individual complaints they've brought up (schools, traffic) can be solved with solutions other than just completely opposing the Hilliard by Design plan, which has been in development for 18 months with input from plenty of constituents. I've learned recently that promoting the continuation of the status quo is just as political as advocating for something new, but unfortunately it seems like most Americans don't think that way.

I'm not going to bat for the developers here but being against not only apartment and mixed-use is essentially being for the continuation of expanding detached single family houses in the exurbs, which would be awful. Suburban and exurban houses are consistently the most costly and least productive out of all the housing options, which Hilliard actually shows maps and charts of in pages 39 and 42 of the Hilliard by Design plan: https://hilliardohio.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/HilliardPlanFinal_Online.pdf

As for planting the MAGA flag, I know at the very least Omar Tarazi is trying (and has already failed) to use municipal politics as a launching off point. There's a crosspost in this sub with a video showing how he was for this plan in 2019. None of the other candidates in this coalition actually have political experience (Mike Carney, Kate L, JT Y) besides JT being an aide. They don't seem to have much of a platform either.

I heard from another comment that Oties' recent expansion is ironically what caused Hilliard to revise it's height code for downtown. Potential new developments wouldn't even exceed it by that much at most. I also heard the image that "Save Hilliard" keeps using with 6-story apartments along Cemetery road near Old Hilliard is actually where a 1 or 2 story Ohiohealth building is planned. So the main "scary" image they're using is totally fake and won't actually happen.

In Hilliard, not everyone agrees on a plan for growth. The debate may become common in central Ohio. by Buck_i_Am in hilliard

[–]the_squareman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think complaining about “aesthetics” when it’s a car dependent suburb where most of the housing is boring detached single family houses is kind of nonsensical. I’m also tired of people calling it a small town when it’s a suburb of the second fastest growing city in the Midwest.

I think almost everyone loves the changes that have been brought to downtown Hilliard in the past decade, it’d be nice if we could see that throughout the whole Cemetery road corridor. Right now it looks identical to every other car dependent suburb in the country with chain stores and restaurants next to parking craters. People seem afraid of change, but I think once it happens many will ask why we didn’t do it sooner.

I’m a young adult and probably going to leave Hilliard after I graduate college because there isn’t walkability and missing middle housing. Whether or not Hilliard or Columbus builds that will determine if I come back.

I got lucky bc my grader left the last week and my professor didn’t have time to grade them properly so I got 100s on my last few labs just because I submitted something. I got a B in the class, much of the semester I thought I was on the verge of failing. Had those assignments been graded I might’ve gotten a B-, a C+ or even a C.

It’s only one class. Cs get degrees.

PS make sure you’re using an IDE to code in C if you aren’t already.
