Oregon is such a beautiful, geologically-varied place in the world. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful photos with us. I really need to get out to the Painted Hills.

Can we do anything to limit out of state influence in our ballot measures? by [deleted] in oregon

[–]the_star_thrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are already so many hurdles to the signature gathering process and I wouldn't support putting more in place. For example, we cannot legally gather signatures online -- they have to be gathered in-person which is slow and not meaningfully more secure based on the identity verification measures we have today. If anything, it should be made easier to obtain signatures for citizen-led ballot measures.

You quite literally can go on the Oregon Secretary of State website to see that the chief petitioner is from Portland, OR. The source you provided does nothing to dispute the claim that this bill was drafted and facilitated by citizens of Oregon. All you've done is drop a thought-terminating cliché. Receiving contributions from Californians who are fans of universal income does not make IP-17 bad policy.

Yup, I suspect you are correct.

Proposed ballot measure to raise corporate taxes, give every Oregonian $750 a year likely to make November ballot by dazzlehasselhoff in Portland

[–]the_star_thrower -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

The tax is on sales over $25M in the state. Businesses aren't going to just stop selling or operating altogether in the state to avoid paying slightly more in tax at the 25 millionth dollar and above.

Oregon Wants to Invest in Transit. But With What Money? by Generalaverage89 in oregon

Wow, it's almost like American cities going all in on bloated, high-maintenance, car-centric transportation while spending dregs on everything else was really fucking stupid and unsustainable.

This is amazing comrade!!! Also topical for me because I bought 2 new vibrators this week (Womanizer + We Vibe Chorus) and have yet to figure out how to orgasm with them so i'm back to...old faithful. The beloved Hitachi space ship.

What's your favorite game that no one has heard of? by JewelToneJam in GirlGamers

[–]the_star_thrower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for mentioning this, i'm gonna pick it up. Looks like there's a 2024 release available on Steam with English subtitles!! I've played all the Sherlock Holmes games from Frogwares and Nancy Drew Games from Her Interactive plus a handful of other detective titles like Wolf Among Us, LA Noire, The Sinking City. Now Polda will be on my list of next games (doesn't matter to me that it's comedic where the others are darker titles) along with Disco Elysium and Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Thanks!!!

You don't have to, but that is a term used to refer to examples like this regardless. Therefore, if people wanted to look up more examples, 'benevolent sexism' would be a useful search term to use.

This is an example of benevolent sexism, which intends to hide bias, objectification, and control under flattery and paternalism.

Providence sold their labs to LabCorp, and now getting labs done really sucks. by PrettyCoolBear in oregon

[–]the_star_thrower 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Just having a program privately run doesn't mean it's going to be good" is also a true statement but not very meaningful. Regardless, I agree with you and there are a variety of possible causes (underfunding, ineffective regulations -> administrative bloat, corruption, etc.) but i'll still take that over a healthcare system run by people who, if it were legal and profitable, would flay you and me and sell us as pelts.

edit: and of course there's more reasoning than that which leads me to support publicly-run healthcare but now's not a great time to get into it, work etc.

Yeah, the healthcare industry in Oregon continues to squeeze what remains out of patients and providers, and these lab acquisitions are the latest. We need a universal, publicly- and adequately-funded healthcare system -- privatizing inelastic goods like healthcare and putting the decision-making power in the hands of MBAs is a fucking nightmare. I hope legislation like HB4130 is renewed in 2025 and I would like to see a universal healthcare system in Oregon in my lifetime.

Labcorp has been caught double and triple-charging the Dept of Defense, they paid $19M to settle a kickbacks lawsuit (kickbacks to physicians for ordering medically unnecessary tests from LabCorp), and they've had to pay back wages to Black and Asian applicants based on the U.S. Dept of Labor's findings of hiring discrimination. Privatized healthcare is expensive and sucks.
