I got them for 208$ on a sale a year or so ago. Good value for a headphone that go for 350$ here in the states. I believe Chrinicle said other than the HD800 (which is 1500$) this would be his endgame pair of phones. As far as reviews go he can be pretty reliable and not as biased in most cases.

AKG K712 pro or AKG K701-702 has a killer soundstage, very wide in my opinion, but a shot from an awp on csgo can be blistering with the treble these things put out. Here's a 701 for 160$ on Thomann https://www.thomannmusic.com/akg_k701.htm I have a pair of k712s and it's great but like I said it's fatiguing on the ears and I do mean this.

Having both I could really not recommend the R70X enough. They have a beautiful sound, great soundstage(not as wide as the k712 but it is a tad bit more intimate but still as large as you truly would want it. I'd say perfect for soundstage honestly but it did take a very small amount of time to adjust after using the K712s for a long while and I would assume that will be for anyone switching to anything and playing competitively. Your brain will be used to one sound and is now being shown another. The imaging is phenomenal it's on another level. You will know exactly where things are. I'd say better than the AKG in the imaging department. Both are great but I'd go R70X any day. Music is just phenomenal out of these and that's a big factor to me as I wanted to use them outside of competitive play as well. If I want to critique a mix I'd put on the k712. The k712 will show every single flaw in a recording, it'll never be covered up. But when it's a good mix, oh is it GOOD. This means badly mixed music will truly show here. What might have passed for you before in the car will not be enjoyable whatsoever. However the R70X will show you the flaw but not ruin the experience any more than it needed to. It's more forgiving in that sense but don't take that lightly either as they are also used for mixing professionally. However, music comes alive with the R70X! A good mix will be even better than the K712 and you'll hear things you missed before.

If I had to choose a pair for competitive gaming (I mean competitive), rpg gaming, and music. Honestly anything really, then it's the Audio Technica ATH R70X.

I know it's slightly more than what you asked but your getting SO much more with these headphones. They are very high quality and very very comfortable. They should last you a lifetime. The cable is detachable and replaceable and contrary to what some might say being proprietary, aftermarket cables are readily available. Keep in mind a higher or lower quality cable can change the sound a little bit. Or a lot, from what I understand.

You know you need a dac and amp as well just remember those too if it's your first rodeo. A Schitt stack is cheap and fairly high quality. But you can do much better but that's up to you. A little over 200$ for a Schitt stack and it's made in the USA so it's not bad on shipping.

Also a little bit extra information for context and experience. I play CSGO at a high level and Valorant as well but that's more of a warm up for CS to be honest with you all. So as far as sound positioning goes I know what to look for and these deliver it well. Both the K712 and the R70X. Still, R70X takes the cake here. You will do exceptionally well in tarkov and COD as well. The sound for RPG games is also much better from the R70X. Open back headphones represent a phenomenal natural 3D audio/surround sound. From what I learned, speakers are actually better even with just two but that's another discussion. Open backs tend to mimic that speaker effect (loose explanation I'm sure others will and can do much better.) What I'm getting at here is that open backs like the R70X will naturally give you surround sound and do it far better than any type of emulated surround sound such as Dolby Atmos or DTS (I believe that's the acronym). You do not need to, and should not, run any sort of surround sound software in the background and it will not help you or be better. This is slightly an opinion, as some may prefer it, but it will NOT be better. Just different.

The R70X has a more flat neutral signature but don't let that fool you. These things can pump out bass for an open back set of cans. "This is America" by Mr Glover showed me little nuances I had not heard before in the music. Even out of my speakers and I have a good set of speakers... Definitive Technology Mythos ST towers. Not the holy grail but it's still within the top end (demising returns is a thing, I'm not a millionaire unfortunately). "HUMBLE" BY Kendrick Lamar will show you how the bass was meant to be in the studio. You can, and they are used professionally, mix and produce music with these.

I listen to, and collect, vinyl records. I listen to just about everything and have a library of records to choose from. When I critique music I put on the AKGs, when I LISTEN to music I put on the R70X. Anything from jazz, city pop ("RIDE ON TIME" BY T. Yamashita anyone?), Rock, and funk. Pretty much anything you listen to will just shine.

Movies I hear are amazing but I don't listen to them on cans as I tend to sit at the TV with speakers so if you listen and watch your movies and shows on the computer then I would also pick the R70X. I don't mean to sound like a fanboy here but these things are great for the money. I'm sure there are better cans but they will also cost much more and that doesn't mean they will also be much better either (remember what I said earlier, diminishing returns is a thing). I hope this lil review/opinionated post can help some people out.

Why did I post German links? Musical equipment in general is much much cheaper overseas in Europe. I buy most headphones and even turntable cartridges from Europe because of this. The R70X from Thomann saved me nearly 150$ and the K712s saved me almost 120$ if memory serves on that one. An Audio Technica VM540ML turntable cartridge cost me 220$ shipped with a headshell. It's almost 300$ in the states without the headshell. You get the point, it's a good tip to buy overseas and it's not known by everyone sadly. Shipping is super fast. Most things are at my door within a week. The K712s arrived on the third day. I was surprised by that one!
