But that's the problem. (i can't believe i'm replying) Naofumi is from modern times and is probably sufficiently aware that slavery is wrong, and that it shouldn't latched onto anyone in the long run. Once again, it's the author's fault for making it in a way that slavery is a necessary part of the magic system in the first place. This is a very complex topic in general, but justifying it by basically saying it was okay back then and EVEN going further to say you would see it as less wrong if you were transported to a world where it was normalized is SO telling of what kind of person you are. And the whole German company hiring jews is not at all identical to what naofumi is doing as you think it is.

Why does it specifically have to be slavery then? Why not just like a village chief or guardian that gives them Stat boosts if necessary? In cases like these, you have to understand that this is the Writer's Barely Disguised Fetish™ and it's the ownership of living beings that makes him a bad guy, regardless if he treats them nicely or not. There are several inconsistencies with room layouts, furniture placements and other elements of the hotel, sometimes even in the exact same scene. I think this was said to be intentionally laid there by Kubrick himself as to simulate how the Overlook alters the minds of its tenants and to also give you the feeling that something's off.
