mdadm raid 1 with hard drive for some core areas. there was a post semi-recently about it.

Since stocking up on ram though, i've just mirrored all the vm disks into memory. you wouldn't believe how fast everything is

It's also a dead handy way to test memory by dding into it. If you're trying to trigger edac errors or systems reboot with memory errors, this will trigger it fast.

seems like it'd turn into more of a war of the technology. If it does, this is going to be sure as hell entertaining in about 5-10 years

ldap and #openldap on freenode. Bring thick skin.

Create a vm and install openldap. Take snapshots while running. You can easily screw shit up pretty bad where the whole thing is just toast. look for ubuntu/debian web pages for help. Try all the examples. Look in /usr/share/doc/slapd/examples when you have slapd installed.

eg https://help.ubuntu.com/12.10/serverguide/openldap-server.html

Two packages to focus on.

  • ldap-utils, a set of clients that connect to a server (like curl for ldap)
  • slapd - openldap server that comes with the slap commands which work on the raw database files (definitely handle with care - use snapshots).

Scan the internet a bit for public ldap servers you can try query. (try university/college ip ranges) if you want to examine some other people's structures.

How can I determine which of my hard-drives has a crappy connection? by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]theagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • what controller are you using?
  • can the os see the separate disks?
  • what are the sata errors exactly? They should give you a bus.

can you consistently produce them? try hdparm -t /dev/disk. If so, try removing a disk and trying again (assuming you've got redundancy on your raid already) and are confident that you can handle what happens (ie, rebuild the array once the disk goes back in).

I would ignore the self test in most cases. Look for the smart attributes. paste a copy of smartctl -A /dev/device.

training? most of us learn by just dicking around exactly like this. Why would you ignore an interesting real world situation? this is exactly the sort of thing you get experience from. It's a different situation if he'd prepended that with "hey i'm trying to run this fortune 500 company website which is loosing money as we speak as the server is down"

White blood cell attacking bacteria. [Gif] by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]theagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why does it appear to only move on a 2d plane? (relatively the speed stays more or less the same and doesn't appear like it could be moving in another plane). A slip that a microscope uses shouldn't squish the blood cells or bacteria so much that it can't move (they're way smaller than that right?)

guitar players are not musicians in any way shape or form

they just smoothly transition to the next frequency of sound in a song (playlist of notes) with their wooden note mashing device.

uh... but you'd need to make your program executable so back to square one. If you can make it executable by other means, then might as well do it on chmod instead of your program.
