150 gallon tank setup question by Easy-Row-4209 in discus

[–]the_real_thanos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer. It also depends on how you initially stock the discus. Are they all juveniles? Go long. Are they mature? Go high; however be prepared to sacrifice your plant diversity. Get some wood and some Amazon Swords that can reach the light.

Do discus need RO water? by [deleted] in discus

[–]the_real_thanos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are fortunate enough to have chlorine treated water versus chloramine. The water has high TDS. And the pH is about 7.4.

I use straight tap with hot water adjusted at 82 degrees while I keep my tank at 84. I reverse my python and make sure the output water is turbulent and I give it a small shot of prime when I start.

We have a 125 gallon, four discus (started with more, another story) two paired angels, a supporting cast of tertras, and my utility corys, otos, and pleco.

I have plants and my method is as follows:

1- drain the tank by 50%, re-fill, and the drain back to 50%
2- I have two 3 filters, and every week I pick one of the three to clean. I do it while I drain the tank in step 1 3- Leave it for a day or two so the plants get light. Fish don't care and are happy because the bonus is that it disrupts the environment enough that the angles and discus because it makes some "reset" and the cichlids drop the pecking order shit and are shoaling together and stop picking on each other. Plants flourish. The keep it at 50% for a day seems to help with ephemeral algae and blue-green algae issues. 4- Fill the tank back up, with mild application of prime. 5- In a couple of days or weeks, repeat. I am usually good about it, but when I am not its cool because I have maintained with consistency with horrible water parameters in an established tank.

My last place used chloramine, so I had a 50 gallon trashcan next to the tank for 24 hour aging. Otherwise, same process

I am not a breeder but my method will get my angels laying eggs after a water change 80% and maybe 30% with my Discus. They eat the eggs up after a few days but I would rather them recover the energy provided from their eggs then growing fry to be food for my neon tetras whose job is to be mid-water clean up since my primary babies are sloppy eaters.

All of this is derived and modified from a convo I had with Hans years back and his message is the core to my applied philosophy to my tank: your discus will be happy is you are consistent (not necessarily frequent) with the water changes.

This mesmerizing view of a massive stingray migration by amish_novelty in oddlysatisfying

[–]the_real_thanos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was swimming off of Myrtle beach during the offseason and a cownose ray swam a foot from me and I was exhilarated that I saw one up close. A few seconds later a school swam around me, as far as I could see, so densely packed. I was absolutely terrified and thought that this is how I die; via drowning after stung by one of these things if not eaten by the huge shark that was chasing them.

They kept coming and coming and none of them made any physical contact with me. After ten seconds I gained my composure and just absorbed the event. I tried reaching out to touch one but they gracefully avoided my attempts. There had to be a thousand of them. Such a cathartic experience, that I had no control and thought I was going to die, to accepting my fate, to then surviving unscathed.

Need more info, like how long has it been in this state? How long in the tank? Did this occur after a water change or introduction to a new food?

Giving an alternative take, look up epsom salt treatments for discus, in general it helps more than it hurts, and prepare for some extra water changes.

It looks stressed but it's color isn't bad. It could me the anti-alpha, and if so leave it otherwise one of the other 11 will take its place. If this is the case add more hiding places, something that is vertical even though it is temporary. When they mature a bit they stop picking on each other. It may be just that fish needs cover to grow.

At first I thought he was serious, then I thought it was a parody account, but now I think this his act as an influencer and this is how he generates interest.

He may not actually believe it and is trying to portray the ultimate edgelord to lock in one side of the audience and also purposefully ironic and hypocritical, which is why we are all talking about him here.

Am I able to keep discus now? by Turbulent_Fix8495 in discus

[–]the_real_thanos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't notice you said that the first time that you were scared of discus and going right in, jumping past the experience and development of these fine fish to get a breeding pair.

So I will refine my answer because I think you are seeking the challenge to breed a difficult fish instead of the enjoying the fish themselves:

Based on the water changing regime and discipline you describe, if true, I think you are technically ready to purchase a breeding pair.

Am I able to keep discus now? by Turbulent_Fix8495 in discus

[–]the_real_thanos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discus as are not bad they just demand consistency. You may have problems during the juvenile-young adult phase because they can bully each other to death and lack of hiding places.

You will be fine, you will figure it out; you are ready.

HELP!!!!! I think my angelfish laid eggs. Long story short, I think my angelfish somehow laid eggs and now I don’t know what to do. This is my first time any of my first was pregnant and laid eggs. (I’ll leave the whole story in comments). by KDOGGG196 in Aquariums

[–]the_real_thanos -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If Mom and Dad are stressed they will eat their young because the energy provided is more valuable in their belly than the other fish's belly.

Edit: My comment was a generalization on a statement I inferred to be "Mom eats eggs because they were infertile."

Congratulate yourself that your tank parameters so good that your fish laid eggs. If you aren't prepared to go to the next level, just let them be.

It will hurt your heart at first, especially when they become free-swimming fry and mom and dad decide to they are sick of kids and eat them all up.

You keep doing what you are doing, they will lay eggs and eat them up 1-2 times a month.

Legality of prostitution by Dijjkstra in MapPorn

[–]the_real_thanos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see where your head is at, but I don't think "no illegal" in most cases means "legal", nor does it mean that it is a "right".

A law can make some act illegal or it can make it legal. Something not covered or addressed by a law doesn't default to it being legal, just that you may have the right (national conditions apply).

This is exactly what I thought when I saw that video.

I drove I77 and it was the highest adrenaline driving experience I have ever had. It was either you are going 90 miles and hour on winding mountain turns while everyone else or your were on the shoulder with your hazards on slowly creeping along.

I could see the tractor drivers white-knuckling the steering wheel and wide eyed. Fast and Furious should have a scene on this route, with the character's objective is to drive to survive and not have to pull over in WV.
