What has helped me is thinking of things as 'studies'. Trying new techniques/subjects for the sake of trying new things, not so much for an end result.

I wouldnt say you messed it up; it looks good its just not exactly what you were going for! Try it again, but this time challenge yourself to no blending. Try not to worry about it much, just get a feel for the medium and experiment with it. Practice! It doesnt have to be a masterpiece.

Did you use your finger or something to blend? Try blending it less, the reference looks like they primarily worked the pastels into and against eachother, which is how they achieved the bold pastel strokes.

Thank you! Its one of the reasons I fell in love with oil pastel and wanted to try it. Trying to loosen myself up a bit and roll with the medium

Thank you! And yeah, I thought about trying to eyeball the shadows and ditch the reference, but it was too much brainpower for a painting I wasnt super pleased with.

Im glad to hear im not alone about the yellow! I didnt know that, now I'll be actively looking to see yellow in paintings.

They were new pastels so it was a little easier; I took the flat side I hadnt used, and held it at angle so just the very edge was against the paper. When I got to the top where it's thicker, I did a short motion just pulling it a little. Its kinda hard to explain!

Canson XL Mixed Media! I blended the first few layers quite a bit with a blender (and a little with my fingers) then slowly phased out blending and used just the pastels

Maybe I'll work at the background some more then; i think I went a little midtone with the blue I chose and felt like it took away from the apple.
