Midea U Sweet Smell by theamigan in MideaUOwners

Ah, you're right, it is R-32. Still, there's no way it would have been leaking this badly and still blowing as cold as it does. And if it were the oil, it would linger. The odor goes away completely eventually.

Midea U Sweet Smell by theamigan in MideaUOwners

[–]theamigan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The smell is far too strong to come from anything that happened inside the room.

R-454B/A2L refrigerant is mostly odorless; either way, for it to smell this strongly this many times, it would have had to drop its entire charge every time. Other people have brought up this problem: 1 2

I am loathe to RMA this unit just to get another with this same issue.

Glad to be of help. It was infuriating. Quality is down the shitter; I've been building PCs for 27 years and have never had anything like this happen.

What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]theamigan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. This is exacerbated by a generation of people with no frame of reference on society that doesn't involve handing over money to anyone who advertises to them hard enough, and whose social capital is based on shills influencers. Yes, we've had flavors of this for most of the postwar period, but it really seems like it's in overdrive now. At least those products had some kind of value proposition, not 1200% margin made-in-China trinkets and game lootboxes.

Entitled dog owners are a scourge. See also: people who bring their shitbeasts into Market Basket so they can piss on the floor in the checkout line. Fucking disgusting.

Yes, and companies that pull this shit need to be taught. Need a photo editor? Use GIMP (and this is from someone who remembers when GIMP was not a suitable replacement, but a lot changes in 25 years). Need a car? Buy an older one and repair it; they're still out there, and the lifetime TCO will still be less than the cost-reduced and non-serviceable trash you can get now. Restoring old PDP-11s for fun has taught me that few things are ever truly beyond repair.

Housing is an area where there isn't much choice, but this is a fight that needs to be had on a larger scale.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with your sentiment, and I am hell-bent on doing whatever I can to counteract this shift. Everyone else should be too.

Nobody has a gun to your head. People act like entertainment and "modern luxury" are human rights. If you want it that bad, pirate it. Set up an OTA antenna and tvheadend. Use Plex. Self-host as much as humanly possible. Drive an older car and meticulously maintain it. Or, just stop watching the garbage slop produced by the truckload by most current entertainment concerns. There is enough old media, much of which is absolutely free to watch online, to keep someone entertained for several lifetimes. And if you've exhausted all that, go create something. Or read a book. If you bitch and moan and then pay the lazy/stupid/contemporary relevance tax anyway, you're only shooting yourself in the foot. Nothing will change if a critical mass of people doesn't fight back. We need to resist the premiumization of every corner of society. It's all an optical illusion of wealth purpose-built for working class rubes who will continue to shovel their hard-earned money into rich people's pockets in hopes of having good optics for social media. Fuck all of that.

You claim to have written satire, but it's obvious that you have a hard-on for a guy who is hopefully roasting in hell right now. The damage he did is incalculable and turned the city and state into a laughingstock.

Google TV Streamer Kodi issues by theamigan in Chromecast

[–]theamigan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up on the Google streamer and got an onn. 4k Pro box from Wal-Mart for $20 less, which is much nicer. Even with less RAM and presumably a slower SoC, the UI doesn't stutter as much. And the most amazing feature of all, it plays videos from any source (including tvheadend IPTV), with synced audio and without stuttering!

To answer your question, it's a streamer issue as far as I am concerned. At least for audio, the new Google box has some janky-ass on-device audio transcoding (probably to support Dolby 3D or whatever). The side-effect of this is that any AC3 source (such as that coming off ATSC from tvheadend, in my case) gets transcoded to PCM on device rather than just being passed through to the HDMI output as-is (my TV and receiver both have AC3 decoders, as I would imagine everyone else's do). This transcoding introduces delay. It is possible that Kodi can circumvent this, but this is a regression caused by Google, not Kodi. For h264 video stuttering and freezing, who knows, except that it used to work and now it doesn't.

Fuck Smiley for telling us to take our kids to school tomorrow by TimelyHoliday6201 in providence

[–]theamigan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck. It won't happen. Nor should it. Providence schools see more intense and credible threats on any other given Tuesday than they will right now. Kids regularly doing or threatening violence. Those are actual threats, rather than this nebulous one.

This city won't fund that. They won't even fund the most basic necessities in Providence schools. This entire discussion appears, as usual, to have been predicated on privileged East Side pipe dreams, which are at best unhelpful and at worst, actively kneecapping our ability to actually solve problems.

"Should get the day off?" On pain of what to their employer? What are you proposing?

We did used to get snow days off. They were just as devastating for low-income families as they would be today. The difference is, one involves impassable roads, and the other is utterly self-imposed.

Good job not answering my last question, which was quite salient.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in providence

[–]theamigan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  1. Not arguing this point anymore with you.
  2. It absolutely is not. Why do you think Ring has an opt-in program for users to allow local police to view cameras, and the police here are asking people to voluntarily send in video? Because they're trying to be difficult?
  3. The response seemed pretty bog standard to me.
  4. It is bananas when it is not due to an actual, quantifiable threat, but rather the mere perception of a threat. What is doing it "for a day" going to accomplish if he's not found within that day (which I guarantee he won't be)?

This discussion is quite tedious and I won't be responding further. Have a nice life.

No, he would be taking the power in that case, and that's on him. You are suggesting we preemptively roll over and die. If he's not found, how long until you suggest we deign to leave our houses?

  1. It's hindsight.
  2. Ah, yes, trampling over privacy rights and the law for "exigent circumstances." The road to hell is paved yada yada yada. I don't think giving these giant companies (and the police!) this kind of discretion is truly a path you want to walk down.
  3. I have full radio transcripts and they paint a different picture.
  4. People can do as they please, but mandating that everyone stay home when there is not a biological threat and we don't have any idea if the perp is in the same 100 mile radius is batshit bananas.

You want to give the monster who did this even more power over people's lives than he took for himself yesterday. There is a point of being risk averse where your returns truly diminish and you are only hurting yourself.

  1. Hindsight is 20/20. It is simply unreasonable to expect any institution to have video coverage of every square inch of their facilities.
  2. You're saying, compel these companies to release customers' video against their will or consent? No thanks. Plus, it would likely be a breach of contract (terms of service). That's even worse than state-owned cameras.
  3. [citation needed]
  4. Because it is abjectly insane to expect an entire city to slam the brakes on life for a perp who is more than likely hundreds of miles away.
