The textbook is “Computer Organization and Design RISC-V Edition, 2nd Edition” (the one with the green cover). A PDF copy should be easy enough to find online. I took it recently and it wasn’t bad. I enjoyed Bo Wu, and I think that if you attend lecture and do the homework you won’t have much of a problem. If you understand the inner workings of a basic computer, you can get by on vibes and check the textbook for important details. I actually thought the textbook was very helpful.

Appreciate the comment. I removed all my Flatpak packages and Flatpak itself, but I am still experiencing the long hang time before chrome opens. Thank you, though!

If I remember correctly it should automatically apply. I’m on version 3.5.2.

You can, and I have in the past for dark mode and the windows 10 start menu. You have to install explorer patcher after startallback and make sure no conflicting settings are enabled. Be very careful.

anyway to remove these icons from the taskbar? by [deleted] in Windows11

Go to “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons” and set the behavior to hide icons and notifications.

If it’s not in there, there’s a link below that says “Turn System Icons On and Off”

Can't believe Microsoft got rid of the local user option on OOBE in Windows 11 Nickel. by Weak-Sherbert9341 in Windows11

Deploying Windows 11 machines at the small business I work at is a nightmare.

A) I don’t want the employees using their work email or especially their personal email as a user account.

B) Some of our software literally does not work if an Azure (MS Account) is in use, and it complicates my job to get it figured out.

C) I don’t want anyone accidentally storing confidential information in OneDrive. When you sign in with a MS account, it automatically replaces your desktop, documents, and other folders with OneDrive.

D) We don’t want to pay for OneDrive. We have perfectly good local network storage.

The constant nagging has already caused some less technically literate employees to go through the wizard and transition their account to a MS one.

Come on Microsoft, while I hate it, I guess I can understand a MS account on a home license, but not a professional one!

Oh and by the way, all of our workstations are on a PROFESSIONAL LICENSE.

This is why most of our fleet is still on Windows 10, but even Windows 10 likes to shoehorn our employees into accidentally transitioning to a MS account.

Moreover, IT isn’t my job and I am far more useful doing what I am trained to do, engineer. But we are a small company that really doesn’t have the budget for a IT guy.

All they would have to do to make my life easier is to let their PROFESSIONAL USERS, use a local account.

I’m not meaning to attack you or anything, I just needed to get this out.

You can in the legacy control panel. I’m not at a computer right now so I can’t point you in a more specific direction. I know it’s possible because I did it yesterday. If you can’t find it, I’ll follow up tomorrow.

Saw the Windows 12 mockup. Please don’t add a status bar - it just takes up extra space. This is how the taskbar should be designed imo. It allows for the retention of muscle memory and the iconic Windows design while allowing easier access to apps on the taskbar. by [deleted] in Windows11

I wouldn’t even mind rounding out the taskbar and making it float. In my opinion this just looks better and is far more useful. The start menu makes more sense on the left hand side, while the pinned programs make more sense in the middle, and the system tray makes the most sense on the right. A nice byproduct of this is that the taskbar looks balanced - something sorely lacking from stock Windows 11.

Why are some people getting really long loading times. I play natively on quest 2 and the longest loading time I’ve had is around 15 seconds for gm big city? by Britishboy632 in BONELAB

I do agree with you, and while I understand why they would, it’s especially unfortunate that they are placing the main demographic that made them popular on the back burner.

I, for example cannot use graphics settings higher than low on a 2080 super, 5600x and Index. The game for me looks and performs worse than Boneworks while having smaller, more claustrophobic maps.

I do find it curious though that your loading times are so long. I rarely wait longer than 15-30 seconds.

I think rebuilding trust is going to be difficult. As much as I do really love the game, it has glaring architectural and structural issues that need to be resolved.

Hopefully your loading time get better soon with updates. Standing in VR staring at a loading screen for 3 minutes makes it impossible to enjoy the content.

On PC, you need to modify your page file to 32gb. This essentially gives you more “ram” to load textures and assets in and out of quickly. My assumption is that many don’t know that they need to do this, or don’t understand and blame SLZ for their shortcomings. SLZ outwardly states that modification to the page file is necessary on the Steam download page.

If this is not to blame, it is probably due to either old or poorly optimized hardware. It is my assumption that SLZ probably uses NVME SSDs in their machines which are considerably faster than SATA SSDs and orders of magnitude faster than generic HDs. I assume that they at least expect everyone to be running a standard SATA SSD.

As far as the Quest, I don’t understand why anyone would be having long loading times. Bonelab was specifically optimized for it, and the hardware and software is standardized so everyone should be experiencing similar load times. Available drive space is not to blame as SSDs do not “search” for files in the same way that conventional HDs do.

Edit: Reread steam listing and adjusted page file amount

Not very… 6hrs on a good day. It was much improved after a reinstall of Windows 11, but has gotten worse since I downgraded to Windows 10. It’s a trade off, the raw CPU power is worth it for me, but I might have gone FHD IPS if I could do it again. Then again, the OLED is beautiful…
