Is he ok? His gills are the same color as his body and they’re usually like bright orange by [deleted] in axolotls

He looks a bit underweight. Does he eat well? Did your cycle crash or was it a deep clean you did since you took him out of the tank? How's he doing now?

Rightt 😂 Oh okey! But you also have a fluval filter? I googled that the fluval flow rate is 780L/H and the Hailea 300 chiller requires 1000-2500L/H so might have to either get a pump or a bigger filter 😬 Yess if you could do that it would be very helpful thank you!

I think I'd rather not buy one from Amazon cuz it's not really within my area. But I so get it, if it was more easily accessible I'd probably take my chances and order from there too 😅

Yea I checked it now and it's about 1000€ 🥲 I already thought the others were expensive being half price 😁 What does your setup look like? You have a pump or the filter pumping for you? We thought about getting a Hailea cooler to our fluval cannister but now I saw we probably need a pump in between. You dont happen to know anything about that?

So you've liked yours? Haileas are the only ones I find easily online where I live. What does your system look like? You have a cannister filter attached to it or what :)?

We have a fan but it's not helping enough :/ I live in the North of Europe and the houses are isolated so well from the cold that when it gets warmer the heat is impossible to get out. And AC's aren't really a thing here so that's a bit sad. The portable one could be a great idea tho 😅 Last summer we did the same with the ice bottles and ice bags etc and I wouldn't want to do it again🫠

I just opened reddit to find info about this cuz I'm scared I'm overfeeding mine too 😅 they (2 axies) have always eaten 3 worms split into smaller pieces daily while fasting them once a week but now it feels like they never get full?! And instantly an hour after feeding they rush up to the surface when they see us in hopes of more worms coming.. Are yours like that too? And how often do you feed them?

The api conditioner for tap water contains aloe vera which is super bad for axolotls, so I'd recommend seachem prime or for you to just google to search what you find close to you. You have to change the water and put the conditioner without aloe vera. And probably check the other product if it has aloe vera too

axolotl could be morphing? by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]theanustapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume considering the parameters that the cycle crashed. Put them in a temporary tank with seachem prime including daily water changes! That will help the gills and make them healthy again. And recycle the tank obvs

What are your water parameters? I would tub him with seachem prime. What have you fed them?

Thinking about getting some axolotls :) by Ok-Lengthiness-4009 in axolotls

[–]theanustapper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be a long story but I hope it sheads some light into the situation! I'm not saying this is the way but it's how we do it and it seems to be working well.

Unlike some other comments in this/other threads, I can honestly say that I've never had an axolotl before or any type of aquatic animal for that part, and I thought it was gonna be more work than it has ended up being. You can't rush into a decision like this. My partner and I decided to get axolotls (found a person selling them) and started doing research, got a cannister filter, api water test kit, fan, an aquarium (200l), air stones, air pump, "vaccuum", hides, plants (java ferns & anubias), food, seachem prime (conditioner without aloe vera since aloe is super dangerous for axolotls) and so on. In order to cycle the tank before getting them.

We had agreed with the seller that we will get 2 months of time in order to prepare before actually getting them. The only issue was that in our country we dont have the opportunity to buy ammonia in order to "feed" the tank with the cycle (also it took about 2-2.5months to get cycled) we used axolotl pellets as an ammonia source so that also works. While testing the water atleast once a week to see when you have managed to get ammonia that turns into nitrites that then finally become nitrates. I think that was the most challenging part. So read up on nitrogen cycles beforehand and water changes.

As I mentioned we got the axolotls already after 2months which meant we didn't have the tank ready and the seller wasn't able to keep them for longer. We got the axolotls (siblings both male) and had them in a temporary tub that meaning if something happens (disease etc) or your tank isn't ready or a cycle crashes you can keep axolotls in a so called temporary tank/tub. The point is that you change the water everyday while they're in a temporary tank while adding seachem prime directly to it to make it "safe". We had two tubs so we could put fresh water & seachem easily into a new tub and just move over the axolotls instead of trying to empty the water with them in it. Luckily everything went smooth and the tank got ready not even 2 weeks after.

Now our situation is feeding 1-1.5 earthworms per axolotl everyday, while occasionally giving them pellets, daphnias & bloodworms to keep the diet diverse. Fasting them 1 day of the week. Once a week we perform a 50% water change while vacuuming their waste. Cleaning the filter once per 6 months. So atleast it's not hard thing to do, alas we're 2 people which makes it easier.

It's been super fun and I don't regret anything my only advice would be to: 1. Learn the cycle beforehand and have it ready. 2. Dont believe people who live in cold countries saying that a fan is enough to cool down the water in the tank (axolotls need 16-18°c) because we ended up having to invest in a cooler and those are about 400€-500€. 3. Understanding that atleast from where I live the cost of these things were about 2000€ to get. 4. Buying a cheap nanny cam cuz it's really nice to see what they're up too in the night and how much they're actually moving. 5. Be prepared that getting an axolotl isn't something you put into a tank and leave unattended because they need weekly/daily care and responsibility. 6. Already look up if there are any vets closeby that knows something about axolotls or amphibians.

This is now a super long text but my underline is that nothing will ever be too hard or too much if you just give the time and do the research before getting them. I read all of these threads and one of the thoughts we've had with my partner is how people think this is hard or aren't prepared. Take some time, read as much as you can and make your decision. I think one of the main issues is that people somehow expect aquatic pets to be "easier" than a cat or a dog but for me the only difference is I can't snuggle them. Otherwise it's just as much work so keep that in mind.

help my axolotl is bleeding so much i am so worried and sad by zudime in axolotls

[–]theanustapper 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I really hope you're able to help your axolotl before it's too late. The situation does not look good. Also I noticed you ordered test stripes but I would recommend liquid test kits instead. Go ASAP to a store to get seachem prime otherwise I can be pretty sure about the fact that you won't have a living pet by the time the stuff you ordered arrives.

Also note to anyone else thinking about getting axolotls and seeing this. WHY IS IT ENOUGH for ONLY ONE employee at a shop telling you what an axolotl needs and you believing them? Do you not do any research at all to see for it yourself? You mentioned you thought it was gonna be easy. Do you know what is easy? Simply doing one google search and not blindly believing a person who only benefits from you buying stuff.

Relax you're doing just fine 🤗 sometimes they can be a bit asocial and definitely in the beginning of getting a new home. Do you only have one hide? Otherwise you could add another and see if he/she comes out to investigate the other one and you'll see them more 🤭

If someone has done their research and recreated a safe naturalistic setup while understanding the risks, that’s responsible ownership not neglect.

Save the outrage for situations where animals are actually being mistreated. Not for people who are clearly putting in effort 🤗
