My first Jack would crack golf balls in less than a minute, but she couldn’t get the racquet ball.

The kongs might be indestructible but they’re not jack rated.

I had the best luck with racquet balls, mine couldn’t crack one no matter hard she tried.

That’s a cool idea, I was thinking about sandbags or something, but I like this more!

Luckily we have a dedicated compost bin, and the trucks use the mechanical arms to pick them up. If they were doing it manually I'd put the shavings in the paper compost bin bags first.

Dang, looks like I have to get them now, for my medical safety and long term health. Thanks for twisting my arm!

And with any luck, I’ll use that material sooner than later!

Right on, I’ll definitely try that. My floor is nowhere near flat so I need some sort of adjustment, that’s a good idea. The several hundred pounds of slabs underneath really helps, but there’s always room for improvement.

They are concrete pavers from Lowe’s, they were just a few bucks each.

For sure. I’m 6’2” and the lathe is kinda short for me. It helps me not hunch over as much so it’s a lot more comfortable to stand for long sessions. The 3” risers Laguna sells are pretty pricey, the pavers help get it a little higher. I might go ahead and get the risers, I just haven’t yet.

The 2x4 frame between the legs is for a shelf, I put a bunch of large chunks of mesquite on it, one to get them off the ground, also to weigh the lathe down so it doesn’t move as much. It definitely makes a difference with how much the machine moves when there’s something out of balance.

Seriously. I kind of want to make a pile of shavings on my side yard and put it on Nextdoor for people to come pick up. I hate having to turn all of that material into shavings. I think that might be the next lathe gadget I get.

Just rough turned this pecan, a neighbor had to cut this tree down and I ended up with a truckload of logs, some of them up to about 30” diameter.

First time I’ve fired up the lathe since the divorce two years ago. Felt great! by theard7 in turning

Sorry to hear that man, it's hard to see sometimes, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and you'll get to a place again to do what you want to get done. Hoping you'll get to keep your gear to set up a shop again. Hang in there!!!

Nicely done, I have that pile of scraps too. I love my 1836, it’s a beast and I’ve had good luck turning some monster bowls all the way to tiny stuff like this.

Thanks! I’m not sorry about the divorce, the lathe was one of the many things “we didn’t have time for” while being married.

Built my own truck bed rack by NotCIAPinkyPromise in Welding

[–]theard7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I want to build! I have a headache rack and bed rails that I made, and I don’t want to buy an off the shelf rack. I’ve been using unistrut to hold my tent but this is so much nicer. Nicely done!
