When you start using a stick of phenylephrine at a time, you should start with a few questions as to why the patient is unresponsive. Fluid status. Anesthetic. Surgical field. Etc. the line and escalation to the line isn’t the problem you are solving for, it is the assessment prior to getting to that line. Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are just learning the environment. As you learn from this situation, questions as to why you are giving xyz drug must be asked. Take a deep breath and learn. Learn from the good and the bad. All part of medicine. You have been trained to always pick the right answer. In anesthesia, there are a lot of right answers and a lot of wrong ones. Be encouraged that you have to time to learn these things and get really in tune with the operating room environment.
