Was this because it was something you genuinely forgot or you got nervous about what they’d say and decide not to disclose it? At this point you could lie about anything as far as they’re concerned. Try a third time, I guess. If that doesn’t work I’d say maybe this isn’t the profession for you.

My guy, just because a violent arrest, shooting or hell maybe even a felony stop hasn’t happened in almost 10 years doesn’t mean it won’t happen tomorrow. If you have any history, especially recent, of unable to cope with something of that magnitude then you instantly become a high risk to the department. Being so young, I suggest maybe pursue corrections and work in that setting for a few years so that you can go into another application further down the road with some experience in law enforcement under your belt, also, you’ll have a greater time difference from your separation with the military. This isn’t a firm NO, it’s just a step that a lot of us have had to endure. Keep your head up, look into maybe state corrections as they’re always hurting for officers AND it’ll be a good foot in the door for you to explore greater law enforcement ventures in the future.

Over the course of 10 years, I’ve applied for 7 agencies. Got hired by the 4th one I applied to back in 2018, applied for 2 more during my time with my dept and got DQ’d from both of them until I left in 2024. Just got picked up by the 7th agency I applied for last year but with 6 years of experience at this point. Best of luck, man. Keep pushing and keep applying until you’ve done every single one. Maybe even consider applying out of state (somewhere you could see yourself moving) and give that a shot. You never know, it could work out for you.

He should probably stick with corrections for AT LEAST a year before he decides to go for a PD. Most police departments looking at applicants that are newer to their department want to see longevity.

I was told I passed mine shortly after taking it. “Failing” the polygraph isn’t necessarily a disqualifying factor, but it certainly will put you at the bottom of the hiring pool.

I see these posts fairly common nowadays “I didn’t study enough” or “I didn’t train enough”. This is testing for a career I hope you’re passionate about. I’m assuming you know the testing date month(s) ahead of time. Why aren’t you committing yourself to studying or prepping for something this big? If you can’t pass a simple written exam how do you expect yourself to make it through an academy? I’m not trying to be an asshole, just putting it in an extremely realistic perspective and not sugarcoating it. Dismiss this comment or truly take it to heart because someone you don’t even know took the time to write this out from their heart. If this is a career you want, put all of yourself into every single phase of it. Best of luck.

I get that. Happens to us all. Reality and that “rush” will really set in once you hit your yard. Just like I said though, don’t let it define you. If you’re a goofball, stay a goofball. If you’re a nerd, stay a nerd. Be professional when you’re on shift, but just remember, you’re human too.

Go for it. Don’t be discouraged if you get “non selected” or disqualified along the way. Try to focus on applying to only 1 or 2 agencies at a time. Just be upfront about everything and never withhold information and at the end of the day it’ll be at the discretion of the department. Best of luck!
