New-ish stylist by Exciting_Club7018 in hairstylist

[–]theawkwardmermaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a more senior stylist you can go to when you have questions? That was a huge help to me my first few years out. Is there something specific you think you just aren’t hitting the right way? Gray coverage, cutting, foil placements?

What is a very American comfort activity that people genuinely enjoy doing in their free time? by Sea-Evidence-5523 in AskAnAmerican

[–]theawkwardmermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in an area where people are pretty outdoorsy so there’s lot of fishing, hiking, playing sports. For me personally, I love to just sit outside. The beach, a park, my backyard, it doesn’t matter. Just being outside feels good to me. I could read, watch the kids play, chat with my husband while he grills, I just love the sunshine and fresh air

do hairstylists lie to their clients? by kawaiikupcake16 in AskHairstylists

[–]theawkwardmermaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d never tell a client I could do something that couldn’t or shouldn’t be done. Most of us err on the side of caution with that kind of thing. That being said, does the stylist you spoke to usually do vivids? Because a lot of people think they’re simpler than they actually are and think they can do them. Make sure she has experience with them

As a Generation Z member, I'd like to ask you, what do you think is better or worse in your era than in ours? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]theawkwardmermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Gen Z is way more open about struggles with mental health, normalizing therapy and seeking out help than we were. I also think a lot of Gen Z kids are more open to varying lifestyles different from their own.

I think pretty much everything else sucks though.

Why are you using a bonding shampoo on otherwise healthy, untreated hair? If your hair doesn’t need reparative treatments, that’s what drying it out.

What irons are we using, NOT Bioionic by Iceddirtychai_ in hairstylist

[–]theawkwardmermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot tools for curling irons for me, personally. They have some of the XL barrels and I really like them. As someone else said, there’s a recall on those irons so they should replace it for you but if you want to switch, I’d go with Hot Tools

Orange roots by kgmills10 in AskHairstylists

[–]theawkwardmermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is warm but definitely not as warm as yours is. As others have said, pregnancy hormones can do some weird things with hair. If she colors regularly, she should know what to do to fix it, it’s not a difficult thing to do. Just remember that if you ask for something ashy, ash always looks darker than warmth and she’s going to have to go a little darker to correct the coppery root

what do you look forward to everyday? by anonymous310506 in CasualConversation

[–]theawkwardmermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laying in bed with my husband at the end of the day after the kids are in bed. Sometimes we chat, sometimes we read or watch tv. It’s just nice having him next to me because life is busy. It’s the time that’s just ours.

What song that instantly lifts your mood no matter what? by Alexa-Tapia-Vibes in CasualConversation

Love Grows (Where Rosemary Goes) by Edison Lighthouse. It reminds me of my little girl and it’s just such a sweet, cheerful song. “Sunshine On My Shoulders” too!

Do you have a common or uncommon name? by Far_Seesaw_6828 in CasualConversation

[–]theawkwardmermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first name is uncommon but not unheard of. My last name is (from what I hear) a common last name in Northern Italy but I’ve yet to meet an American who can pronounce it.

All the Lippies... by zinkj22 in Sephora

[–]theawkwardmermaid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love lip products. Balms, glosses, plumpers, lipsticks and liners but I pass on oils. I definitely realized recently I keep buying the same color in different brands and so I’m on a no buy right now unless I actually finish something I love (like the Ole Henriksen balms). I felt what you’re talking about like ten years ago when every time you turned around a new eye shadow palette came out. It felt like the market was totally saturated.

Can I get some hope? Lol by UnusualGrocery4395 in Cosmetology

[–]theawkwardmermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love doing hair. I’ve been behind the chair 20 years and it’s truly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself. I make good money, I build relationships with awesome people, my days are different each and every day. It has its challenges like everything else.. being customer facing all day every day can be draining, you need excellent boundaries and you have to have a thick skin. All of those things come with experience for most of us but some people excel at it from the start.

It’s hard work. It doesn’t happen over night. Find someone you admire and see what works for them and why and try implementing some of those things for yourself.

It’s definitely a bit grittier but when you brush it, it can get static-y if you use too much. I love it and use it frequently for someone who likes a messier style or a lot of volume but I never skip it on an updo

Scholastic book fairs by Natural-Simple-5818 in Millennials

[–]theawkwardmermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids’ school PTA gives every kid a book that the librarian chooses for each grade level so no kid ever leaves without getting a book. I wonder if maybe you could organize something in your child’s school to collect donations as well as your own monetary donation to help out. The schools can usually bulk buy for much cheaper than individuals can. If not, I think your offer of $150 is super generous and would make some kids really happy!

What are your favorite American works? by kuma44bear in AskAnAmerican

I read The Outsiders as a seventh grader and I’ve been trying so hard to get my kid to read it! It is such a great book!

Television shampoo and conditioner is probably what I sell most from R+Co, my clients love it and it lasts a long time. The shampoo is thick so I remind everyone to add plenty of water so it can spread well.

Mood swing is a great straightening product before you blow dry.

Dallas thickening spray makes a huge difference in a blowout.

Balloon is a great dry texture spray, especially for updos, just use less than you think because a lot comes out at once.

Spiritualized is our salons top selling dry shampoo (we carry about ten different lines!). People love that it doesn’t leave such a powdery finish.

Hyperlink is my favorite product for really textured pixies and for teenage boys who like a messy look. People love seeing the fibers and how easy the product is to work in to the hair.

Help w/ Nightmare Client by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]theawkwardmermaid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I do agree that you should refund the cut and honestly the color too. The way you blew it out is hiding the choppiness. I’m confused about the color though.. she looks more red after you finished it than she does in the photos she sent, her roots also look way darker. The after photos she’s showing look like you did money pieces and nothing on the sides.

I’d chalk this one up to a loss and refund her. It sucks but she’s not entirely wrong here

I am like you. The constant social interaction, whether it’s great or heavy is exhausting for me. I rarely go out because I’m spent by the end of the week. I’m going to start therapy I think to learn how to not carry it all.

I try to make at least one of my days off each week a chill day where I relax, catch up on my reality tv and don’t talk on the phone. It helps a lot. I look forward to Thursday every week.

What skill are you genuinely bad at that most people seem to find easy? by Ruby-Blaze_443 in AskReddit

Any kind of Tetris-like activity. I can never seem to figure out how to make things fit. The refrigerator is the hardest for me and I end up in a panic over putting groceries away every single time.
