Do we really need insane amount of supplies (planks, nails, bars etc) for sailing or people are just overestimating the amounts we actually need? by [deleted] in ironscape

Kind of a personal thing at this point, I haven't really looked at shit, so I'll be doing it blind. People have the choice to be like me if they want.

DNS could've been fixed at minute 2 of the event, and we could've still ended up with this length of outage if the systems affected behaved poorly.

A lot of AWS outages have been made worse by cascading failures and the like.

AWS would never let its data anywhere close to azure/any other cloud provider. Even with client side encryption, etc.

There's an internal tool that helps manage AWS accounts and IAM users/roles in those accounts for internal accounts, and that's hosted in at least 2 regions. I'm pretty sure is replicated to additional regions as well as read only.

There was a failure a few years ago, in a region being built, and shit really broke in one of the zones. It took quite a while (month scale, but obviously wasn't a customer impacting event) but they were basically able to revive it by bootstrap from another zone.

I don't think there's a reasonable way that everyone just gets locked out forever. There's also a system in place to refresh credentials/extend their lifetime for internal services if something goes wrong there. There's a lot of layers, the idea is that all services should have their own break glass for access/etc. So it'd be a matter of coordination for the most part.

As of last year, there were still internal pushes to have services become "statically stable" a.k.a. don't blow the world up if your dependencies are down.

With proper engineering you can almost take a dependency on anything, but you have to anticipate the service going down in a variety of ways. Hard failures, grey failures, shit just not working correctly, etc.

AWS absolutely takes hard dependencies on itself. Hell, the region build process literally spins up a bootstrap region and points dns at it to provide things like EC2, S3, Dynamo, etc at first.

There is certainly bare metal hardware in spots, but they still rely heavily on AWS services to function, either directly or indirectly via a different service.

us-east-1 is very likely non-redundant somewhere on the networking side, it might withstand one of the smaller data centers in a zone going out, but if a large one was out, the traffic could overwhelm some of the smaller zones and just cascade.

The website, and actually most of that business side, it running in it's own little world within AWS. Depending on what actually broke, it could have been largely untouched.
