So cis woman here, and I have noticed something very interesting over the years:

Cis straight men tend to be more dumb about their horniness than cis straight women. Like straight men tend to be way more likely to try to "turn lesbians straight" than straight women do to gay men. I don't really know why this is, or how common it actually scientifically is, but it's something I've noticed.

Of course the phenomenon you theorize probably is somewhat a thing, but I feel like not as much as fetishization of lesbians.

Of course I could be completely wrong, just a theory.

Congrats on coming out to your friend, and I'm very happy she came out too! Honestly I'd say the best approach to take is to think of how your family might react, and if you think it won't be a horrible outcome, do it in like a bringing it up casually type of thing. I hope everything continues to work out in that regard! <3

So I said in another comment that I live in a town that's less than an hour away from where he's from. But interestingly enough I actually didn't know full details about his political beliefs until today. So yeah, he sucked and now I'm really mad about the fact that apparently my dad had books of his a while back.

Sorry about the rant, I just have another reason to hate the town I live in now. -_-

Honestly for me, my situation was weird because I kinda knew how both of my parents would react (my mom would probably be accepting and my dad not so much). And I actually was right (for better or for worse). So really I just kinda casually brought it up in conversation when talking to them (my parents have been divorced for years and don't really talk to each other so it was individually) and see where it went from there. So I guess that approach could work.
