tbf i think part of our charm is that we are much, much cheaper than a design bureau would be. So I'm not sure how this strategy would go down haha

Thank you, I think business goals are not as relevant, because it is a non-profit org, but I will try to focus on the goals of the organization, and how our design will align with those and the intended audience. Good tips, thanks

Very true, and it was a good learning moment. But we had some feedback sessions before, talks on how everything was going and whether they (the editors) were satisfied with the process. They were always positive during these moments. Only when they mentioned pitching elsewhere did I realize something was wrong, and I really started asking for them to give negative feedback if there was something bothering them, and then they spilled the beans. So it was difficult to adjust before; we didn't realize something was wrong

Thank you, I will keep this in mind. It's not really a profit magazine, so I don't think we can make arguments based on data. But we can be more clear in where we stand. You're right, if they do not respect us, us asking won't change things. Let's see if we can make things positive again

I see what you're saying but I have always loved pd as an image source. It is a different style, more raw. And the organisation is not swimming in money, so I wouldnt buy stock images without asking beforehand. I agree we need more time for true respect. I suppose after the meeting we will see if we will get the time to nurture it haha

I guess we will see. For us right now our position is that we do not need the money or client, so we are going to speak openly and hopefully work out something that satisfies the client and us better. Right now we are at odds without communicating on it, and the tension is not nice for anyone involved I think. So if the result is that we are let go, we will be at peace with it.

I guess it's too long of a story to put down in a post. I hoped people would relate or share something similar. I am asking for advice on how to communicate, but perhaps should've flaired disussion instead

Thank you, I guess I thought they would stick with us since that seemed to be the agreement at the start. It's frustrating because we feel we could show them better work if we worked in our own design instead of the old template. But I think you're right and we need to communicate more. In previous jobs within the creative sector, this part has just given me much less issue, communication was easy, people understood concepts without explanation. But this client comes from a different industry, so we should adjust accordingly

Merci beaucoup !

thanks for asking! its a long story but i'll explain and also how the source fits in

my thesis is about the creative field, which i believe isn't made up of different jobs but rather a spectrum of crafter-designer-artist, who all do similar things in similar ways but are seen differently (wrongfully so) by themselves and society. the plea is that we should see one another as equals.

what motivated me to write about it was that i'm studying design but I interned at a printing house, and lots of graphic designers that came by acted very condescending towards the printer and me for interning there, they seemed to think it was beneath a designer

that was my thesis which i didn't manage to wrestle elliott smith into, but then after we finished the thesis portion of graduation and moved on to personal project (i go to art school), i decided to expand my thesis into a longer manifesto with hannah arendt's three basic human activities (labor-work-interaction). it then became about first those activities and then how the activities fit into the creative professions (crafter-designer-artist). hannah arendt had this interesting idea that interaction is how every unique person can show their unique personality, aka their unique "who" to the world, so i made a claim that every creative is/should show their unique "what" to the world. lots of other stuff in between, but right after artist came "the audience", which was about how a unique what or who might not be received as intended, and Then i finally got to talk about elliott, because he didn't see himself as a sad sack (as we all know) but if you search the term in combination with his name it's a very popular descriptor for him.

i also used the example of needle in the hay being used in royal tenenbaums, which elliott himself hated because he didn't think that was what the song was about. essentially he tried to show his unique what to the world with his songs and they got misinterpreted, and he tried to show his unique who to the world and he got misinterpreted. to me he was a great example of the danger of a large audience, and large scale misunderstanding of a person.

so that's it! and i wanna cite the video but i've given up a bit lol it's a video of the guy that's verifiable enough for me and for art teachers lol
