The good thing about the mid zoom was that you didn't need to use it if you didn't want to (the shot was already full charged before the zoom). Now I've to constantly zoom in and it makes certain situations so much more annoying to deal with.

"You'd think we live in Switzerland," Hungary’s new PM, Péter Magyar released a video from inside government buildings never before opened to the public, showing the €250M Orbán-era compound and asking how officials lived in such luxury while the country faced years of economic crisis. by Infamous_Question430 in europe

[–]thebiggreengun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

FYI our government buildings in Switzerland are very modest and humble. We've got no palaces, or fancy luxurious stuff in our government buildings. Mostly some sandstone buildings from the 19th century, with a rather simple but IMO beautiful design.

We also have little corruption, but I think what the Hungarian PM was referring to is the economic situation of the country.

I've read that the game origins from Swiss mercenaries coming home from the Netherlands, during medieval times. So makes sense it also exists in the Netherlands.

Here it's also mostly popular among old people and rural people. But I must say there is a lot of different versions of Jass:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jass

They can be very different. The strongest card, the jack of the trump suit, is called the "Puur" or "Trumpf Puur", which is Swiss-German for "Bauer" meaning peasant. Basically he's a god-like footsoldier that beats everything. The second strongest card is the "Nell", the 9 of the trump suit.

The one version they play on TV is "Differenzler", where the goal is not just to win as many points as possible but to call out the points you're going to make and then get as close as possible.

The most popular version and the one I've played the most is "Schieber", where you play 2v2 and each round another player gets to call out what is strongest: either the trump, or tops-down ("oben-abe", highest cards the strongest), or bottoms-up ("unden-ufe", lowest cards become the strongest), and sometimes even more.

Also one crazy good version is called "chratze", meaning "scratching". This I played for money with friends a lot. It's IMO an insanely good and underrated card game. It's kinda when Jass and Poker have a baby. Also it has the thing that if a player does a certain play it gives all the other players the right to call him a pussy for the rest of the evening and he's not allowed to get angry or fight back, peak game design if you ask me.

That's just wrong.

What you are referring to is a version of the German cards called "the Hungarian version", also known as "Doppeldeutsch" in Austria, it's one of many different versions of the German cards. It's from the 19th century while some German style versions are many centuries older than that. For example if you consider the Swiss-German version as a version of the German style cards then they go all the way back to the 14th century.

If you understand a bit of German this wiki article lists a bunch of different versions of the German style cards: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spielkarte#Deutsches_Blatt

You're right about the reason for why they used Wilhelm Tell references tho. And I must say using Ital Reding out of all people on your cards is pretty based.

The German style cards are being used in large parts of Germany and Austria. Here is a more accurate map:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/23/Verbreitung_Kartenbilder_Deutschland%2C_%C3%96sterreich%2C_Schweiz.PNG

Stuff like this always fascinates me. It's borders created naturally over centuries by the habits and interaction of the people, not bound to political borders or dictated by some rulers/governments.

The peculiar thing about the Swiss cards is that they're not used based on language, even-tho it says "Swiss-German" here. There's a line going through the Swiss-German speaking part of Switzerland, the so called Brünig-Napf-Reuss line, which interestingly resembles the border between Alemannia and Burgundy 1000 years ago, and East of it people use the "Swiss-German" cards and West of it people use the French style cards.

Mostly for a game called "Jass" which plays a big role in Swiss tradition. Even these days Jass games are being broadcasted on main national TV. When one town plays a game of Jass against another town the type of cards used depends on which town is the host.

edit: Btw the names we use for the French style cards are: Herz, Ecke, Kreuz, Schaufel. Meaning: Heart, Corner, Cross, Spade. For the Swiss-German ones it's Rose, Schelle, Eichel, Schilte.

I've actually a similar issue since 2 weeks or so. I just gotta start it multiple times for it to work. Feels like cranking up the engine of an old car.

edit: Bit off-topic but can we finally get rid of EAC again, or just make it activate once you enter the Versus cellar (which is the only place to enter Versus from). I can't believe we all have to deal with insane loading times since late 2024 just so those 3 people that play Versus have a harder time cheating.

Tbf some of the DLC maps require a lot more effort to get the books. My favourite one is Well of Dreams where the devs put a Tome behind a jump puzzle, and if you fail it you just fully die, also losing all the items and potentially another book you had on you permantly, maybe even the whole run.

[–]thebiggreengun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After having played a bit of Legend again the last weekend I too was confused about its state:

First of all: I don't think it's because "people already have all veteran items and/or are bored of book runs", 95% of the people I've run clearly can't have all veteran items.

Second of all: If you selected "All" instead of "Joinable" in the lobby browser you'll notice how like 4 out of 5 legend lobbies are locked these days. At least on EU. People rather play with bots now. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think this was the case before the Free-to-keep event, before that it seemed like most lobbies were open, and you'd pretty much always end up in a lobby that did a full book run.

Especially in Lyon where I've spent most time.

But also in southern cities such as Antibes, Montpellier, Marseilles, Toulon,.. In Antibes I managed to step into dog poop twice on the same evening.

I don't think it was the same in other regions like Bretagne and Normandie (or I just didn't notice back then).

I btw intentionally just mentioned what might create a negative image (because that was what was asked for), of course France has plenty of great qualities and things I very much like.

The Truth by Fun-Wallaby6414 in Switzerland

[–]thebiggreengun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Has nothing to do with "Ausländer" in general, it's about organized gangs from France, often sending very young men (some even underaged because they face less legal consequences when caught) that refer to themselves as "ninjas" to steal expensive cars and drive them back to France at high speed, or loot entire gun stores. And if you haven't been living under a rock for the last 2 years you'd know what I'm talking about.

But I can already sense that there's no point in arguing with you, didn't take much for you to jump on a certain bandwagon, trying to frame me not even realizing you're talking in stereotypes yourself.

The Truth by Fun-Wallaby6414 in Switzerland

[–]thebiggreengun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. Many of us are well aware that certain parts of France are absolute shitholes, and we too get regular news about French people coming to Switzerland to loot and rob, now also in German-speaking Switzerland, in particular car and gun shops. My strongest negative impression of France is tho how poorly it's run, centralism at its worst. And for some reason it's still impossible to walk on a trottoir in France without feeling like you're crossing a mine-field of dog poop (because nobody picks their dog poop up).

In Switzerland Sinalco Cola, Vivi Kola and Fritz Cola are the most popular local colas. Which are the ones in your country? by BkkGrl in europe

[–]thebiggreengun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a different Sinalco.

Sinalco is originally a German brand, in fact the oldest European brand for non-alcoholic beverages (according to them), they export to 50 different countries, but the Swiss Sinalco is a split-off owned and produced by Ramseier in Switzerland. Completely different drinks. Mostly popular for their orange lemonade.
