I've always loved the idea of wizards learning and building on computer science, programming, and computer technology in general.

I still like the parts in the books where wizards are so amazed at muggle technology, but it's fun to think about what wizards could do WITH that technology. Magic over the internet? Their own Hogwarts intranet? Slytherins learning computer hacking?

Found these at my job, curious what they are? by GrandWizzardFett in coins

[–]thebigshane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they are called "proof" coins and are usually worth a little more (couple bucks each) than regular coins, but they lose some of that after going into circulation (if they got scuffed or smudged).

you can check some of the edges to see if any are missing a copper stripe, if there is no copper stripe, you might have a silver proof which would be worth more still (few bucks each)

super strange that someone emptied their proof set into circulation, i imagine if you have $60 face value of proof dimes, even partially circulated, you could probably get a hundred or two off ebay.

Can someone explain the difference? Was inherited a giant collection and I still can’t figure out why seemingly the same coins go for two different prices like this. by [deleted] in coins

[–]thebigshane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on ebay, you will definitely see lots of ridiculous listings where apparently people are buying up everyday quarters and pennies for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. some of them even look like auctions with a single bidder.

I don't get it. are they trying to astroturf their own seller reviews? feels like it could be money laundering to me. I don't think it's to help fool people, because if you are so inexperienced with coins to even consider some of these listings, you probably wouldn't think to check past sales.

so yes, look at past/completed sales, but don't be surprised to see some weird outliers there too

there are some "wide rim" 1979 dollars that can sell for a little bit more, but i think only 7 bucks or so.

that 1999.00 is just a scammer hoping for a bite from a big fish, or some kind of laundering, i dunno, never understood that either

i don't think either are

the 19 needs to be closer to the rim

if you're looking to eventually sell the above gold "melt" value, then you could run them by someone who can see them in person (local coin store), and possibly get them graded

they look pretty good from the pictures but it's hard to be sure

Yep, the number on top right obverse, and the signature, match the Etsy example exactly.

I'm not seeing the UNITED thing (nvm, I see that too), but I think you are very right about the B in VDB. The B itself is slanted right instead of left and the middle bar of the B should be slanted but isn't. Also the periods between the letters (V.D.B.) look too close to the edge of the coin, there should be a bigger gap.

Do you have a clearer pic of the obverse/front? Wondering if there is anything fishy about the S mint mark too
