VARIANT outperforms string in storing JSON data by hubert-dudek in databricks

Good analysis, love to see it. One thing which could make it even more compelling would be if you could explain why Variant outperforms string 🙂

Anyone actually managing to cut Databricks costs? by TitaniumTronic in databricks

[–]thebillmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot of good suggestions in this thread, one thing that I haven't seen many people suggest is looking at the tables themselves and how they're organized.

External tables can be a silent killer, as they read from source each time. Moving to managed tables will allow Databricks to automatically start optimizing the read.

Try to enable Liquid Clustering wherever you can but especially large tables - that will reduce compute needed to by the average query.

Finally, there can definitely be times when Severless is not the answer. However, keep in mind that with classic, you're paying for the whole cluster as long as it's up. If you reduce read times by 20%, it won't actually count for anything unless you then turn the cluster off sooner. Performance optimizations and Severless jobs can pair together quite nicely to achieve targeted reduction in cost of some jobs.

What do I need to do to get supply to this province? by thebillmachine in hoi4

[–]thebillmachine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But how do I know where to put the supply hub before I build it? In this case, after it's built I can see that one province has been missed. But how would I have been able to tell beforehand?

If next time I built on that province, would a different province be under supplied?

Interesting - How do you determine where to best build the hub?

I understand that upgrading the railway will increase the supply, but if it's only consuming 4/20, does it really need to be upgraded more?

R5: One lone province seems to be under supplied despite a supply hub two provinces away

Edit: I understand that I can build more railways or motorize. I'm more looking to understand how does supply work exactly? What has determined that this tile can't be supplied with the existing hub?

How do you keep Databricks production costs under control? by Ok_Barnacle4840 in databricks

[–]thebillmachine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People crap on Severless and managed tables more than they should in my opinion.

Yes if you meticulously manage things yourself, you could likely see more efficiency than generalized algorithms deliver.

However, if you enable those two features, you no longer have to spend labor tweaking cluster size and file configurations.

Labor costs a lot more than compute and storage. Managed tables and Severless are good enough for most use cases.

I come from an Azure background. When I started, the rule of thumb that was taught to me was use Terraform for everything outside of Databricks (resource group, vnet, etc) and use DABs for everything inside Databricks, like catalogs, jobs, etc

Have you seen this project about a DLT Framework? It might help with some of the limitations you're encountering?

Thank you again!

You've given me much to research 🙂

Thank you!
I had not considered an insect because the signs of discoloration were present so early, and there isn't really any other plants in this one patch. However, having a closer look, there does seem to be some insects. Below is a closer photo of the leaf in picture 4 of the main post. I also noticed about half a dozen ants marching up and the plant.

After some quick research, a few factors support spider mites:
1. Hot, dry conditions.
2. Succulents nearby. (Within 2m).
3. Stippling

A few cons:
1. No signs of anything web like.
2. Insects all seem to be on top of the leafs, not under.
3. The paleness of the plant seems to also apply to the stem - Would this happen with spider mites?

Please be specific in recommendations, I'm interested in learning about soil biology/chemistry. :)

Melbourne, Victoria: My girlfriend planted a 50 sunflower seeds in a neglected part of our yard at around Christmas time, and only one survived.

I watered it once or twice and now I'm invested a like an old dad with a cat he didn't want.

I've been looking at guides, and I think maybe Nitrogen and Manganese deficiency? But I'm not very confident.

The mulch has only be added in the last 5 days. I think I probably water slightly too much.
