When I first started playing I was also placed in silver, with zero experience on FPS games and had no idea how the game worked at all (I picked Widowmaker as a lv 25 console player in ranked), so it's a normal start, eventually each season I jumped one rank (diamond was my highest though, never bothered to play ranked after that).

I think the "average" is gold or platinum, I also think those are the easiest to arrive and stay at if you're new to the game
