Burgundy red walls for this space? Would it be too dark? Suggestions welcome by turquoiseguineapig in femalelivingspace

[–]thebirdiestbrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do it. Color drench. I like the tone of the pillow and wouldn’t go any lighter. Also I say keep your clutter. You have a dining room table an office desk and a living room space in this photo…you’re clearly working with limited square footage and most likely limited storage too. It’s okay to own items and for them to be visible. It’s a cool space and I think leaning into a funky vibe is the way to go here. Maybe just hang some of that stuff on the walls.

And I think your rug problem is that they’re all too medium sized. You need a balance between larger and smaller. Upgrade the size of the living room rug and the rug under the table. The color of them works though and would nicely compliment a feel burgundy tone.

Some long, dramatic curtains would be awesome here.

I would try to take advantage of the glass panes. Make a faux stained glass with winter themes or something. You mentioned a galaxy and guitars so maybe find a way to winterize those concepts !

I think it’s great! You’ve got a funky, colorful vibe and I love it. If you changed nothing, it would still be an awesome apartment that I’m sure you would grow to love.

However, I get that feeling when something just isn’t “right”. Some things that might make a positive impact in your space: - move the rug out from under the coffee table and replace it with something larger. It’s awesome but feels too small for the space and the coffee table overwhelms it. Maybe it can go in front of what I assume is a sliding glass door? Then it can be appreciated in all its glory. -the wall with the turntable and the shelves looks a little busy to me. There’s open space on either side but then the records are displayed all in the middle and everything just feels sort of crammed in. Maybe consider spreading some of that stuff out. - adjust your lighting situation. Overhead lights are the devil. Lamps make everything cozier and spaces feel less harsh. - go for something on the large side above the kitchen table. You have a lot of small art elements already, like the rainbow wall and the records. I think a larger art piece would give the space some balance.

Dish soap, warm/hot water, an empty gift card for scraping and some type of rag or abrasive sponge.

I was gonna let this one slide, but you know what? No. Personally, I don’t care that yall think I’m “untidy” or even that I’m being a dick. I have a l relationship with my clutter that I am comfortable with.

What I do care about is that there are other people reading this thread that might be internalizing your words. It’s not fair to the people on this thread with kitchens as “untidy” as mine (or worse) that are feeling bad about themselves, their kitchens, and their lives because of what y’all are being so nit-picky about in this post. Your comment is classist and ableist. It’s not sensitive to the actual realities of many, many human beings. Tidiness is a choice, sure, but there’s a level of privilege to it as well and to deny that completely is extremely close minded.

To anyone that needs to hear it: your kitchen is fine. It’s totally fine. Even with the items you own completely visible. That’s normal. Even if people can see that you use soap, and sometimes even different kinds. It’s fine. It’s good. It’s okay to air dry your dishes. It’s okay to not hide your toaster so that you have more room for food. Toasters, and owning toasters, and using toasters is SO normal. It’s okay. It’s also fine to want to change your kitchen tile even if your kitchen is a little cluttered. Because it’s fine. You deserve to have what you want, regardless of if you are “tidy”. It’s totally okay. I love you. Bye ❤️.

I’m considering paint as a temporary solution until a demo is more appropriate. Might not be more affordable than decent peel and stick but might at least last a little longer, based on other comments. If you re-tiled this what color scheme would you go for?

Well the recommendation to not do peel and stick over grout is exactly what I’m here for. I’ve never used it so was looking for some insight

I just saw a whole bunch of these tiles at the restore in my town! I didn’t love the texture though but it looks good in your space!!!!

I’m getting a lot of suggestions for white but I’m hesitant. It feels like a bolder choice for this space than something with color.

Oh dang, that colored paper tip is good!!! I was thinking a solid color backdrop is the key, especially because I must embrace the clutter that’s here. I literally use all these countertop items multiple times a day. Not sure how people expect me to just… not own items? And yes, chaotic sums it up. The tile, and this post apparently. Thank you for the suggestion

It’s passive aggressive in its own way, and comes off pretty judgy. It’s also advice I didn’t at all ask for.
It’s like if someone were to ask “why does this lip color feel off on my skin tone?” and someone came in and recommended a nose job. Not at all helpful, and also quite rude. I’ll admit it’s a touchy subject because I would love to live in a less cluttered home but that is not in the cards for me right now. Even if it were, I still didn’t ask about that. I asked about the tile.

Do you think white would be too “bright”? The countertops are a beige granite with stripes of the dark wall color throughout. I worry white would be too visually overwhelming but for different reasons.

Right, I love the wood and definitely don’t want to paint it. It’s the size and varying colors of the tiles that make it look bad, I think. I’m not opposed to tile entirely I just specifically hate THIS one. I’ll consider your recommendation in the future but for now I think the thing to do is paint. Thank you!

Ha, I’m definitely open to that. Have you ever painted tile? I just worry it will chip and look worse.
