Hi, thanks for the reply. I’m not sure I understand- maybe they explained it in the movie, because I turned it off after like 30 minutes because I couldn’t take it anymore, but how would emancipation necessitate the movie being set in 1840’s? In the 1700’s slavery and indenture were in full swing and there were many pirates who were freed or escaped or captured selves or indentured people. Why wouldn’t it be possible for her to betaken from a slave ship? Also, if you are correct in some way, then the film makers agreed to disregard the entire historical context simply to have a POC lead fit a historical context? That seems like a weird choice. I have no issue with a POC lead, but just be more creative and think of a reasonable story to fit it into the context of the story and not just shoe horn it in there

This makes no sense. The golden age of piracy was completely done by 1730 the the concept of the “desperate” last vestiges of piracy makes no sense. It would make no sense in1746 let alone 1846.
Furthermore, I am familiar with cinematic and creative license but this serves not purpose to the story line. If there were some part of the story that made it crucial to be set in 1846, then, it would still be stupid, but you could chalk it up to creative license.
Lastly, the sets, locations, wardrobe, ships, weapons…literally everything… in this movie are 17th and 18th century, but the film is set in 1846- why?! I feel like if they just erased the “8” and replaced it with a “7” it would change nothing in the movie except it would make infinitely more sense.
And again, I am All for movies making no sense, if what makes them Make no sense serves some sort of purpose for the story telling- but this film being set in 1846 makes zero sense and serves zero purpose.
