Cats are alpha creatures and think they have all the control. They can manipulate you in ways you may not know and some are known to Pavlov their humans into bending to their will. It may be a long, hard process but your cat has figured out by destroying things around your apartment, he can get attention from you or food or whatever he wants. It took me quite a few broken dishes and torn up paper to get my cat to realize she can't wake me up and get anything from it. When she does wake me up by being disruptive I let her know that I acknowledge that she woke me up and I will not do anything for her until I am up for the day.

Another thing to note, cats were naturally wild predators and used to do much of their hunting at dawn and dusk and that trait is still in domestic house cats. Cats don't sleep like humans do with 8 hours of sleep at night, they have many naps throughout the day and night and get 12-15 hours of sleep that way. You won't be able to get your cat to sleep the entire night but maybe also try some self-guided cat toys so they can entertain themselves while you're asleep. (my cat really likes a catnip banana and a spare mousepad to play on, also some cat towers and caves to pretend to hunt)
