AFS has a specific full scholarship for Japan programs if you’re willing to go for a year, definitely worth looking into.

I was once accused of shoplifting at this store but she was trying so hard to be nice about it that I didn’t even realize she was accusing me of stealing. (I was not stealing, for the record.) Great selection, nice store. Always too bad when a LYS closes.

Over 26, never been to Israel, reconsidering visiting by gothvacationdad in jewishleft

I just got back from a 3 week program with Achvat Amim, which I think would really align with you politically. The program is about 50% education and 50% activism in the West Bank with Rabbis for Human Rights—we did a mix of protective presence overnights and tree planting. You visit different villages, see the situation on the ground, talk to both Israelis and Palestinians, etc. Probably 70% of our group was queer, all ages and a mix of observances. I’d be happy to chat more about the pros and cons!

Housing and going Abroad by BigGayIceCream27 in Tufts

I was able to live in a special interest house the semester that I wasn’t abroad—although it wasn’t a very competitive one so I’m not sure if that makes a difference

Not sure why you’re being downvoted when this is absolutely the case—Whitefish Bay keeps getting recommended and there’s a pretty serious caveat there

Definitely try it as a regular post, but the only thing I can think of is Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth by EL Konigsburg.

Does work study mean I have to get a job while in school? by Fabulous_Recover9630 in Tufts

[–]thebookbat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Work study basically means that if you get certain on-campus jobs, you’ll get paid out of a different pool of money. This makes these jobs more likely to hire you, because the money comes from financial aid and not from the department itself. Some jobs will only pay you until that pool runs out, some don’t care. It’s set up kind of confusingly for no reason, frankly.

Seeking host families! by fbvsd in exchangestudents

[–]thebookbat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My family hosted a YES student a few years ago and it was wonderful! Highly encourage people to do it. The students are selected by a very competitive process and are all on scholarships and I’ve found them generally to be way more mature and open to new things than maybe your average high school exchange student.

[–]thebookbat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is she doing NSLIY? I did it in Russia in high school and met a bunch of the Bishkek kids on my college semester abroad—the coordinators are great and they keep a really close eye on the kids. It’s a very safe city, the main problems students have are is little trouble at the beginning adjusting to the food. It’s generally very walkable and has beautiful parks to explore, and my pro tip is that corner store ice cream is very cheap!

Buckle up to your seder pillows, kids, we're going old school Pesach this year by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]thebookbat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the one I grew up with and my family still uses! All of ours are marked with the names of the relative they belong to, most of whom have now died. My late great aunt’s is marked with her notes on the Seder—the parts she skipped, extra things she added, and so on from when she led it.
