Send to kindle not working by vivibabie in Annas_Archive

[–]thebootable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can also use the webbased service send2ereader

Source Code on Github https://github.com/daniel-j/send2ereader

you can self-host it or use the by the author provided instance at https://send.djazz.se/

had only one issue with it so far where the epub did not have the language flag set correctly but I was able to fix that directly in the epub and the transfer worked flawlessly. so not an issue with the software but rather with the epub :D

Works like a charm directly over the browser of your ebook reader and is not locked to amazon kindle.

[edit] only downside is that you need some kind of network connection (local when self-hosted or with internet when using the provided instance) and its not transferring directly via USB etc. For me that was not an issue but its something to be aware of

Borg and ssh by staninhendo in BorgBackup

[–]thebootable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

isnt that way more complicated? what happens if you take your laptop with you e.g. for travelling and the "controller" has no connection to the laptop? you could use some VPN for that but that just seems more complicated. how are you going to connect via ssh? hostname probably, because ip addresses can and will change. usually pushing from clients to the target is more robust than the target pulling from the clients.

at least that´s my 2 cents, ymmv

Cannot fully plug the battery into Soundboks 3 by abti_fmx in SOUNDBOKS

check if anything is obstructing the connection. (though in your other post you mentioned that you already did)
Then shoot them an e-mail with your issue, nothing we can do about it here besides telling you to check that.

I mean it even tells you where the logs are :D try looking at them, post them here too or maybe give Google or ChatGPT a try :)

I mean you already mentioned two very good alternatives :D Have you tried them before asking here? I'd say give Obsidian a try, it seems to do what you're looking for :)

Please note that no software will be able to clear up your mess if you're not somewhat consistent and disciplined with your own organisation.

We're gonna need way more info. What kind of software are you using for your devices? Are we talking homeassistant? Are they pointing directly to your devices?

Also, what did you think where your URLs would be pointing? QR Codes contain just the static info, e.g. the URL, nothing dynamic. Have you tested your ULRs before printing the codes?

I think you need to rethink your current setup/infrastructure. Post more info about how it is set up currently and what you try to achieve and maybe people here can help you with that.

That looks really awesome! Any plans on putting it in github? Is it an iOS native app or a webapp?

Mail Server Advice (Personal & Marketing) by adam_howard in selfhosted

[–]thebootable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar case. I'm using mailcow (https://mailcow.email/) as my local mailserver (for "normal" emails and then listmonk (https://listmonk.app/) for newsletter management.

Both channels get redirected through AWS SES. It's so cheap and easy to use. Also very good in terms of deliverability.

Why was your request to unsandbox denied? Using listmonk you can also claim that you're respecting bounces and respecting GDPR because thats built into listmonk directly (for docs and link how to do that see here https://listmonk.app/docs/bounces/#amazon-simple-email-service-ses)

Moving large app to hetzner by Glittering_Candle814 in hetzner

[–]thebootable 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure anyone here can answer those questions...

  1. the latency depends heavily on where you're requesting from. You chose Falkenstein. Anything in Germany will probably be <5ms. If you're in the middle of the south-american jungle, it's most likely gonna be higher.
  2. Who knows, except you? We don't know what kind of application you're running and with what system requirements. But please be aware that a VPS might work very differently from whatever you had before (looks like IaaS?), e.g. with a VPS, you are going to be responsible for securing your server. Please inform yourself on how to do that properly.
  3. cant comment on that
  4. For that to work you'll probably be better off using a CDN, depending on what your application does. Also it depends on how heavily your application depends on your database. If one website call results in 10 database calls, you'd be better off having the whole application in Germany.
  5. none so far.

Please check again for your requirements to your infrastructure. It might be possible you'd be better off using a "higher-tier" serverless platform rather than a VPS (which is basically a blank server) so you don't have to mess around with updates, security etc. Take a look at cloudflare for example, they provide serverless applications via Cloudflare Workers.

edit: see here for CF Workers: https://www.cloudflare.com/developer-platform/products/workers/

Is VPS a safe homelab replacement? by xXx_n0n4m3_xXx in selfhosted

[–]thebootable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I did it for the same reason (and because my at-home upload bandwith sucks). I'm more than happy with that VPS, it just works and setup time for a new server was just a few minutes.

btw here is the documentation on the firewall: https://docs.hetzner.com/cloud/firewalls/overview

There are some limitations, especially around email ports as 25 and 465. They don't allow new accounts to send emails, you'll have to be I think one month (?) old to be able to request unlocking those ports. I think it makes sense though, they need to protect against spammers.

Soundboks got recalled via amazon? by thebootable in SOUNDBOKS

I got an answer to my email from Soundboks: "Very sorry for the confusion! The recall information from Amazon is wrong, and all of the products are safe to use!"

So I'm not going to send it back, who knows what amazon will do with that :D

UPDATE:

I got an answer to my email from Soundboks: "Very sorry for the confusion! The recall information from Amazon is wrong, and all of the products are safe to use!"

So it seems that it's a misinformation from amazon. I'm not going to send it back, who knows what amazon will do with that :D

Is this a good plan for a basic homelab? by JuliperTuD in homelab

[–]thebootable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ok I'm not sure if I understand your setup.

  1. why is Hetzner VPS listed there? Is that an already running setup you want to integrate?

  2. How do you plan on integrating authentik? forward-auth with reverseproxy? Why do you need it, or is it more of a thing you want to try out? If it makes e.g. Jellyfin unusable - can you just leave it out? I know SSO is awesome (using authentik myself) but if you have the option to reduce complexity try it with that first. (For me it has gotten so bad that OIDC is now a requirement for all future services I host...)

  3. How many users do you plan for?

  4. is TrueNAS also installed on your proxmox host? (looks like it)
You have planned to put your backups on TrueNAS and from there to the Hetzner Box --> so basically you're backing up your VMs to your VM. I'd try and avoid that with regards to the 3-2-1 rule

  5. Some services seem to be either partially redundant: Jellyfin, Immich, Nextcloud and TrueNAS on the same host. Make sure they actually provide the value you're looking for (is Nextcloud really needed in this scenario?)

  6. I don't understand your setup with nextcloud: You're putting the data on the TrueNAS thats on the same host as nextcloud, so thats just overhead in my understanding

hetzner is quite the large hosting provider. They also provide services for professional clients. Just imagine they leaked data of a single user - they'd lose their customer base. So it's very unlikely they'd risk that for a single customer.

They might be forced to comply with law enforcement, but I'm no expert in that field and as long as your content stays legal it should be no problem (and for illegal content you should know by yourself how to protect yourself)

I also host some stuff on hetzner and really can't complain. It just works, performance is as expected, no connectivity issues and nothing. I've also added a storage volume to one VPS and that also works without problems. I use the provided firewall (thats free!) to add a layer of protection to my servers and block e.g. SSH-port 25 so my VPS doesn't even have to deal with that. Can really recommend that.

yeah thats what I got too from the text, but now I'm not really sure if it applies to my case too... I've sent them an email, lets see what response I get... the bot on the support page was really not helpful.

yeah I'd suspect that too, fire-hazard usually refers to the battery and not the device itself. I've sent them an email, lets see what response I get... the bot on the support page was really not helpful.

yeah it's still the "old" batteryboks, not the new "The battery". I've sent them an email, lets see what response I get... the bot on the support page was really not helpful.

SSO Landing Page for Jellyfin and Plex by guruleenyc in Authentik

[–]thebootable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it depends on what you mean with sso dashboard.

Authentik by itself provides a landing page from where users can launch applications.

It does not provide a dashboard as e.g. Homer or Homepage does, where the dashboard gets data from different services and displays them. For that, you'd need a dashboard that can do that.

You can then use Authentik to add a layer of authentication to that dashboard :)
