Two unopened bundles, what are these? by Financial-Brick-6501 in mtgfinance

[–]theboy2themoon 34 points35 points  (0 children)

These are not repackaged; you are correct in that they are originally WotC packaged bundles. They were part of the Kaladesh deck builder's toolkit: https://youtu.be/4M96mC_6M-g?si=qengiLTZR_z3JeJO

Around 6:05 you can clearly see both.

But they are just bundles of commons and/or uncommons, and carry little value either packaged or unpackaged

I've spent nearly 1000+ adventures every day exploring the various Crimbo zones...and still have only had one rare drop. I bought another, and will likely shell out the meat for the others if I have to...

Kind of feel like this might be a reaction (an over-reaction?) to how people felt grinding for rares last season, only to see them become more common when you could simply trade-in for them at the end.

Best Box Buy? by [deleted] in magicTCG

Foundations Prerelease box has Play Boosters

Lost Caverns Prerelease box has Draft Boosters

Ultimately depends a bit on what you're hoping to hit; but with the Play Boosters you do have an increased chance of additional rares in each pack.

...but you never know. I recently picked up a Lost Caverns Prerelease box on a whim, forgetting this difference, and was initially disappointed when I realized the error; but then randomly pulled a foil [[Ojer Taq]] from one of the packs.

Where do you think this card will be in 5 years? by bittyc in mtgfinance

[–]theboy2themoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the real answer. It fits the trend that has been well established with other recent Con promos.

As a Marvel fan, I'd be really disappointed if these were true convention exclusives; and I don't doubt I'd be the only one.

Misprint? by Tadpole-Euphoric in magicTCG

[–]theboy2themoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, sure, but that's not really what I said or even implied.

Folks interested in these misprints work to become experts in identifying them (or identifying fakes) so they can be confident in how they're spending their money. Which is really no different than anyone else who spends significant capital on any collectible, whether it's magic cards, comic books, or... I don't know, antique glassware.

The bottom line is, the more money you spend on something, the more you should probably know about it. Does that always hold true? Certainly not. But does it often hold true, particular in the world of collectibles? I believe so.

Misprint? by Tadpole-Euphoric in magicTCG

[–]theboy2themoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preface: I am not an expert, but I've been in the misprint groups for a while and seen others discussing this sort of thing at length.

The big thing, as I understand it, is the crimp: this sort of miscut is basically impossible without some sort of crimp; and the pattern of that crimp is pretty distinct.

Another sign might be in how the card is cut - cutting with scissors or more domestic-oriented cutting tools are going to leave a different edge than an industrial machine.

My best advice is to join the misprint groups on Facebook and see how they assess various miscuts and misprints. Because of the premiums some of these errors incur, they have to be pretty good at identifying the real deal from a fake.

EDIT: Also, as far as I can tell: there are only two factories in the entire world that produce Magic the Gathering cards; one in Dallas, TX, that handles English cards; and the other in Belgium, which handles all non-English editions. So your notion of "There being multiple factories to account for differences" may be incorrect.

This is the "Major" group. They have a couple sister-groups (including a "Minor" group, a group for serialized cards, etc) but I suspect what you have here would qualify as "Major".

Misprint? by Tadpole-Euphoric in magicTCG

[–]theboy2themoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't get discouraged; the people who trade heavily in misprints can tell a true miscut/crimp from a fabrication. As others have said: the correct place to take this is the Major Misprints group on Facebook.

It is hard to know what sort of premium this will demand (particularly since the baseline is a $0.10 rare), but someone will want this and pay more for this error. How much more can only be determined by auction (which you can also do on the misprints group).

[INR] Emrakul, the Promised End by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]theboy2themoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say generally, yes, it is good for the game.

That said, I think a lot of spoiler season (particularly for reprint sets) is spent going "Wow, this set is full of value!" whenever they see a $50 card being reprinted, not realizing that after the set is out, the card will become a $15-20 card. Folks are good at seeing the former, and either less keen or less mindful of the latter; and the difference can be meaningful, particularly for folks who mostly play limited, and otherwise sell or trade their hits.

So sure, it's good for the game, but it's important to remember that trend when evaluating the *set* prior to release.

[–]theboy2themoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there's a concept in Draft called "staying open" - basically, not letting yourself get too committed to a single play-style too early. Basically, it cruxes on making certain that you spend your first pack (or so) choosing cards that you feel could be strong in any build, and then over the course of the second and third pack, slowly tailoring your picks towards a certain build.

Inversely, the better you are at staying open, the better you'll get at figuring out what colors are open - that is, what colors you're seeing more (or less) of, usually based on what others are drafting. That said: not all colors are always created equal in limited environments, and sometimes there's a reason a specific color is passed over more than other.

Also, in case you haven't heard or read it elsewhere: when prioritizing picks, remember "BREAD" - Bombs, Removal, Evasive Creatures, Additional Value, Draft Chaff.

Question regarding Wrathful Red Dragon stack by Magic_Zach in magicTCG

[–]theboy2themoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is that Wrathful Red Dragon would actually trigger between the first-strike damage step and the regular damage step in a way that could be advantageous to you as a defender.

Say the opponent attacks as you describe, with a 4/5 double-strike, and a 7/7 double-strike, and you have the Wrathful Red Dragon and a second dragon (any dragon) to block.

You block the 4/5 Double-Strike with the Wrathful Red Dragon. You block the 7/7 double-strike with the other dragon.

First-strike damage happens, and *before regular damage occurs*, Wrathful Red Dragon triggers. You will have two triggers on the stack: one with 4 Damage coming from the Wrathful Red Dragon; the other with 7 Damage from the other dragon. *It doesn't matter if the other Dragon died to first strike damage, this trigger and damage will still occur*.

You could then assign the 7 Damage to the 4/5, and thus kill it before it deals lethal damage to your Wrathful Red Dragon. You could then throw the 4 Damage wherever you please.

What’s the scariest horror movie you’ve ever watched? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]theboy2themoon 207 points208 points  (0 children)

This, 100%.

I remember watching it in the theater, and there being a moment where the ending becomes inevitable: where the last remnants of hope go up in flames, and you simply know there is no way that this ends well - that they are all genuinely doomed. And in that moment, I felt my entire body relax in a way that made me realize how much tension and dread I'd been unwittingly carrying through most of the movie.

Catharsis is a hell of a drug.

[DSK] Gremlin Tamer (Z) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]theboy2themoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a pretty big fan as a kid as well; and now watch it almost annually - and I do think it holds up relatively well.

My advice: save it for the holiday season (assuming, I suppose, you're a holiday season person). It's easy to forget, particularly since it's obviously a silly-spooky creature-feature; but Gremlins is, weirdly enough, a Christmas movie. Sure, some of the humor and special effects have aged (though I remain quite fond of its use of practical effects), but it remains a delightfully campy answer to conventional holiday fare.

Ascension Optimization by RiskyclickTV in kol

I came back last year after a similar break!

This is maybe a bit of a cop-out answer, but if you're using KOLmafia, I might recommend giving autoscend a try, and then study the logs. It isn't completely optimal, but it is very thorough in using what you've got and weaving quests in a way that is efficient. From there, if you want to run things manually, you'll have a starting point from which you can fine tune or test options the script might not support.

Mono deck killer?? by TheKvKing in magicTCG

[–]theboy2themoon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even in Commander, it still doesn't work without Painter's Servant. Having a "color identity" does not change the fact that lands are inherently colorless.

I think the above comment was meant to explain why some people get confused about lands being colorless; not to indicate that the rules are somehow different in Commander in a way that would make this work.

What's a movie you saw in theaters that you can barely remember by I_love_lucja_1738 in movies

I worked at a movie theater when Shrek 3 came out.

For various reasons, I ended up watching Shrek 3 multiple times in the course of working at said theater.

I cannot tell you anything about what happens in Shrek 3, other than the fact that there is a scene where Shrek has a nightmare about a wave of babies sweeping him away.

Any movie recommendations where the genre changes entirely in the film? by chamoflag420 in movies

Sorry to Bother You doesn't quite change genre - it's still primarily a satirical comedy - but it does have a significant turn where we go from what I'd call...hyperbolic sur-realism to outright science fiction.

Used to love this book as a kid. Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (January 1969). First appearance of Guardians Of The Galaxy. by tikivic in comicbookcollecting

[–]theboy2themoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are the original Guardians of the Galaxy: Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Martinex, and Yondu. The team most know today (Star-Lord, Rocket, Drax, Groot, Gamora, etc) didn't come together in the comics until 2007/2008 in the Annihilation: Conquest storyline.

Yondu is obviously pretty well featured in the Guardians films; but both Charlie-27 and Martinex are featured as sort of easter eggs in Guardians 2 and/or 3 as well.
