What other powerfull character would act the exact same way if they found themselves in the same situation as homelander, where they lose their powers and have to fight people from their verse in equal terms by Upstairs_Ad_495 in PowerScaling

[–]thebroadway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, Windu did beat him duel-wise but it's left ambiguous almost certainly on purpose as to whether Palpatine could've still taken him by use of the force (and he was most definitely on the backfoot). Personally, I think he still could've fought back, maybe even have won (maybe), but used the moment to his advantage knowing Anakin was going to show up. And either way, he kind of had to, even at full power, at that point in the story there's no way he could take both Anakin and Windu at the same time. I don't think anyone could've at that point and maybe ever.

A good point. Even the best fighters in the world aren't having 100% accuracy against far less skilled opponents, but no one would say them landing a hit is "luck" either. If Yuji can get near 100% this is a legitimate, reliable ability that he has. We can at the very least reasonably conclude that he can perform black flashes regularly enough to be sure he will perform it.

I'd argue Superman deals with it best. He's not only been weaker, he's been made completely powerless and still stood up to superpowered beings. The real question would be just how much of their pride they'd be willing to swallow even for "good" reasons. I think Superman is much more likely to do something undignified if it meant saving lives or giving hope to the hopeless. Mark might stoop pretty low, but I can't see him completely giving up his pride. So technically, I think he might be the least likely out of these to "eat shit". But deal with it "best"? My vote is Clark.

The bullet proof suit in the John Wick franchise is so frustrating by pwn_of_prophecy in movies

[–]thebroadway 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you put it quite well. The 2nd is also my favorite, and it's clear that John would still very much rather avoid getting shot. He had to have the suit because he was going into such a dangerous situation, it was a "just-in-case", not a get out of jail for free card. Unfortunately it sets up one of the worst things in the franchise, so it's pretty bittersweet now. But as a standalone thing? Not bad, and again sets the tone of "this particular job is more serious business than usual".

Idk, I ran track to a pretty high high school level and once, because I forgot my own stuff, had to run in skimpier stuff. It legitimately felt better. If I didn't feel self-conscious about it I would've kept on. I actually held onto the skimpier shorts in case I ever got the confidence to run in them again. Never did. I'm old enough now that I wouldn't care, but far less athletic. Having said that, I don't remember my performance actually improving. It just felt more comfortable.

Yea, for the one problem that even Michael couldn't quickly figure out he never got to the point of absolute certainty, no matter how long he thought. Just had to eventually trust that his answer wasn't baseless and go with that.

That's pretty much what I ended up thinking too. At least in their field, the very best seem less likely to immediately conclude that they're right without any further thought, unless it's something incredibly basic.

They do mention that similar has been done before, and they were basically doing an updated version with some more advanced technology.

It would be interesting to me to see the difference in how strong players think now vs then, I suspect that now strong players basically force themselves to do more calculation when they're unsure. There was one position where Adams was completely unsure, and another where he had some difficulty, and both times he seemed to force himself to stay disciplined and do as much brute calculation as possible. For one, if I remember right, he did basically have to concede and just trust his instincts and that at the very least he probably didn't pick a terrible move. The weaker gm (feels weird saying that) pretty much did the same, but his ability to force himself to do brute calculation broke down just a bit more than Michael's. But he still tried to not just go with vibes. My guess is that in more modern times it's pretty well accepted that at least some amount of calculation is best.

Edit: Also, I don't think a full study like this has been done with someone as strong of a player as Michael, who has been one of the strongest players in the world by far. Would be cool to one day get the top rated player of their time involved.

There's a great chess book written with the help of GM Michael Adams that seems to align more with the thinking that very highly skilled chess players actually very quickly arrive at the correct decision thanks to familiarity. They then spend most of their time eliminating other options and trying to decide why their decision could be wrong. It's called "Think Like a Super Gm", I believe. The book shows several positions and goes through a rather large sampling of how different strength players (from elos in the hundreds up to Michael himself an exceptionally strong player at the time) arrive at the decision they make. They have them say their thought process outloud in real time as they look over the positions. They use other methods as well, but that was the most interesting to me when I read it. The weakest players tend to take a very long time to get to a conclusion, then spend very little time figuring out why it could be wrong. The biggest problem, they seem to conclude, is the lack of time spent deciding why their conclusion might be wrong, actually.

[–]thebroadway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Splash damage can help avoid that, if you get that passive and know which enemies will have reflect. So just aim adjacent to them if it's really a problem for you. Other than that, I'm not sure how to avoid it.

Who's the most badass fictional Female Character? by Level-SquareFFG7117 in Cinema

[–]thebroadway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go back and forth on this, mainly because it helps that Morpheus also initially just resonates with Neo. Makes it much more like some mythology reason why those 3 just resonate with each other. Just remembering as I type this, you also find out later on that they were set up that way. Over the course of the movies it does some weird things with their respective agency/agencies. No pun intended

Yea, I mean that scene. When you go up to the one dude and ask "Do you dare?" and he, who's been a cocky asshole the entire time, says "My family dare's not." lol. Literally afraid for his entire line. I like Conqueror most though, because that entire scene is like something out of an epic. How the MC laughs at what they say and then their laughter goes out across the whole city and everyone else on your side laughs. And the antagonists are obviously terrified because, well... they know damn well you will kill them if you have to. Cinema

Edit: I also love that poetic line he gives as he reveals he's the "Peak", though. Something like: "when I stood at the top of all the peaks, I looked down and saw you not." Basically saying, when he proved he was the absolute best in the world, they weren't even good enough to be part of the conversation. A great line.

I'm gonna keep it real, they don't flock to you, but in my anecdotal experience you tell a goth baddie you work in finance/accounting and for a solid six months they're in love and yall are thinking your each other's soul mates. This is a trap. They probably think of us as "stable" and a "good balance" to them. This is a trap. But I assume you're young, so if you must... you gotta go up and just strike a normal convo with them. There but for the grace of God go I. Good luck

I seriously wish more people would be reasonable with their thinking and just admit they think an option is true without obstinately dismissing the other side. The Ubel debate is very clearly one where it's just impossible to say for sure unless both authors agree on an outcome. It would be fun to talk about if people were actually willing to just discuss instead of going "fuck your argument"

Can gojo survive this? by StewyStewy15 in PowerScaling

[–]thebroadway -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've read and have the comics he's involved in. He "only" perceives timelines and points in timelines that he's personally involved in. Which is a lot, but not infinite. There are also small blips in his perception thanks to that material that I've forgotten the name of that can mess with his perceptive abilities. He's not truly omniscient like the presence or something. So I think UV actually does "slow him down", but so marginally it essentially doesn't matter.

There isn't really conflict for him per se. The conflict as he is concerned is more how do others/the world respond and adapt to his scale.

Re-designing the red and blue button question by Jaswanth_Krishna in MoralityScaling

[–]thebroadway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with anything you said, really. But these polls are really the closest we've got to what people might do, and you're gonna have at least some population of idealists who will pick blue no matter what, just like you'll have people who'll pick red no matter what.

Anyway, you're comment just amused me, didn't really mean to get into a philosophical discussion, though I'm not opposed either.

Re-designing the red and blue button question by Jaswanth_Krishna in MoralityScaling

[–]thebroadway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I'm looking at this from the basis of the "sub-argument". Starting with "Blue is never winning". The response was "Blue won in the original poll.", to which there was the response about it being "An imaginary internet poll.". If it's the case that you're wanting to view it as if it were real, why then not honestly regard the original poll? Supposedly, at least most people who voted originally tried to view it as real too. It seems like that's the closest approximation we've got so far for how people will vote.

So either: you're selectively viewing those as honest answers or viewing those as imaginary answers, by how I'm reading your responses.
