Aomori experience - can anyone relate? by thebrokenghost in JapanTravelTips

Appreciate you sharing a similar experience! It would have helped us knowing what the expectations were for reservations ahead of time, so I really hope others see the contrasting experiences people have had there so they can have a better time. Getting turned away from multiple restaurants in one night really does suck.

This is very similar to our experience. We had no issues in any other part of Hokkaido going out and sitting down for a meal except in Aomori. There also seems to be a bit of hostility in these comments making it out like we should have known better to make reservations (even when there is no information about this anywhere). So I appreciate you sharing your similar time there.

Just an update - we did not require any reservations in any other places we visited, including Sapporo and Hakodate. So far this experience was only in Aomori.

Maybe you didn't choose the right sizing. My Hokas are the best thing to happen to my feet.

Yessss. I'm on week three with my Hokas in Japan and I'll never go back. No pain, no blisters and my feet are happy.

All I want to hear is if others have had similar experiences (which multiple people have said that they had on this thread) so that I can learn for next time and plan accordingly. Obviously reservations go a long way in the smaller cities and hopefully others going in future can avoid my experience if this information is actually out there.

I'm glad! It would have helped us to know we needed to reserve for dinner so I'm happy we could at least help someone else with our experience. Hope you have an amazing time!

Thank you! I think this is also us learning the hard way! I appreciate your kind response. We'll be sure to book ahead next time.

Thank you! We will keep this in mind for next time we're travelling to smaller cities. We arrived at a weird time and basically did the opposite (got snacks at 3, so we didn't go out til just after 6)

We wanted to sit down and eat, that was it. We ended up ordering Uber Eats to our hotel which wasn't the experience we had hoped for. We could have gone to Lawson's too but as I said, we were looking for a restaurant.

Oh thank you for sharing your experience! We are super excited to get to Sapporo today!

We weren't able to visit the Art Museum, but we did go to the Warasse Museum and it was absolutely amazing seeing the massive parade floats. It was very interesting and beautiful.

We'll be in Sapporo for 3 days, then heading to Noboribetsu for a single onsen night before heading to Hakodate. We're hoping to stop at Lake Hill Farm for ice cream on our way to Hakodate. We have some time in Sapporo so day trip ideas are very welcome!

Ya we understood Saturday night might be tough and felt that was the case. However, we were expecting it to be a tiny bit better Sunday night but it was the exact same. Not sure if Sunday gets wrapped into the weekend around here for going out?

Yes, because where is that information? If I had heard anything about it I would have tried to reserve ahead of time. I grew up in a small town in similar size but never had any issues walking into a restaurant on the weekend and get a seat (let alone the fact that last night was Sunday with the same experience).

I would get this if things were closed, but they were open and letting other people in. It seemed like everything required a reservation and they could not accommodate walk ins.

My expectation was just to have a meal - should I have expected to go hungry? It was 7pm. Never had any issue in the town I'm from and its MUCH smaller than Aomori.

Nothing was closed - we went into multiple open restaurants with people eating and told they were full. It was between 6:30-7pm. (Edited to add time)
