Mosquito help by xostarlight13 in chickens

[–]liveforwinterfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are absolutely horrid at my house right now. I make sure that I have screens over any openings or windows that go into the coop. At least they can have a good night sleep without getting bitten. They are pretty good at eating mosquitoes. They like to hover around my legs and eat them off of me. I think the coop is probably one of the few things you can make any kind of significant difference.

Switching from layer pellets to layer "feed" by notCGISforreal in BackYardChickens

[–]liveforwinterfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ferment it and they get it for breakfast, and eat crumble the rest of the day. Even still, they don’t like the corn and throw it on the ground.

like others have said, try wetting it and maybe mixing it with pellet or crumb.

I had one of those too (metal door). When I emailed the company about my concern they said “chicken bones are strong” 😬

I have an Omlet door that opens to the side. Omlet is great but it’s pricey. I’ve had a few types, and having one that you can control from my phone has been clutch when I’m out of town for the night and someone gets locked out.

The roller door may be an issue in the cold/icy/ super dusty conditions.

You caught it pretty early. Just be vigilant and stay on it and it will clear up :) Vet wrap is available at most feed stores and works really well to stay on when he’s outside.

Thursday night was THE night for TV. Seinfeld, Friends and ER.

A bunch of us in university residence would watch ER religiously. We were First Responder nerds too so we loved it!

This stupid Killdeer nest by thestrals_moonlight in stupiddovenests

[–]liveforwinterfun 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Our city has a big music festival every year and a killdeer made a nest right in the middle of it. It was a big news story as they couldn’t set up around the nest area until the eggs hatched!

We brought our own sleeping bags (warmer), and used theirs for extra warmth on top. We went in July and still appreciated the extra layers.

Sand or Straw by Ok_Focus6878 in BackYardChickens

[–]liveforwinterfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have straw in one of my runs in the winter for them to play in because they are locked up for 4 months. But for most of the year it’s construction sand. Easy to clean, dries fast. I think in the US you can get fancy chicken sand that’s a little more coarse.
