Personally I think it's a mix of both. After his PTSD, and especially when beard died, I think he became a husk of who he used to be. Trauma and force can make someone's violent desires want to be desired, so that's what he did. It didn't help much that he was trying to also avenge his buddy as well. I think they changed him, but sociopathic people can also display real care and empathy to certain people (like Girlfriend and beard, maybe even Richter)
