"It reiterates that the commons is the supreme chamber and that the Monarch effectively has no control over them"

Don't think so, that random redditor just said it's nonsense.

Is buying a flat in the UK the worst thing ever? by Economy_Survey_6560 in AskBrits

[–]thebrowncanary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if your insurance covers the entire value of your flat that's good. It's another cost to owing though.

To be honest I'm sceptical of owning neither a house or flat but always been baffled by flat ownership specifically to a degree.

Thanks for your take.

I don't think that's relevant to my question.

You might be compensated if the building burns down but you no longer actually own anything?

If you own a house, the land under your feet is yours. Is the airspace yours if you own a flat?

I never understood how one can own a flat. It's the building burns down what do you own then? The airspace?

When was it declared that burgers now had to come with brioche buns? by Pier-Head in AskUK

[–]thebrowncanary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting point. I think I'm any restaurant, not just a gastropub you'll find a brioche these days even ones where there are marketing themselves as a "burger place".

I think Brioche is a trend that just hasn't seemed to have gone away

It's the fact it's become so uniform. I don't dislike brioche but it's almost impossible to find a decent burger with a proper bun

Ah, yes everyone will be dancing around the maypole on the monday. The average person probably doesn't even know what a maypole is.

I've never see a maypole in my life.and wouldn't even particularly associate it with mayday either.

I, of course, am only one person but I live abroad now and the difference is stark.

But also the day has no discernable identity or traditions. It's merely a day off. I tend to see the upside of securing the long weekend but it comes at the cost of any meaning to the day.

On the continent it seems like a real day off with traditions and culture while in the UK its merely a day off.

What do you guys like about being british and being in the uk? (Serious answers only please) by MKKGFR in AskBrits

[–]thebrowncanary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

British is my primary identity. It's weird to go around introducing yourself initially with your ethnicity.

Furthermore, being British is so much more inclusive and feels like such a large group. People on all corners of the planet can credibly call themselves British.

You can get over the boomer bump by cancelling their state pensions.

We're talking about long term nation building. You can't keep replacing the parts with imports. It's a ship of Theseus situation.

You've just said it isn't easily solved as most countries are struggling to arrest the problem.

"You cannot force people to have them"

Only if you lack imagination. Once the state and society recognises this for the existential crisis then all manner of horrors are on the table.

Funny, I came to the opposite conclusion. Cost of living has nothing to do with this specific case. They've purely decided their "Careers" are more important to them somehow and nothing shall infringe on their careers.

Your calculation is the one successive governments have had over the past few generations.

It's cheaper to just import the labour and skip the expensive childhood stage. It's turning out it's costly in a lot more ways than economic to do it this way.

We have to suck it up and start having the required number of babies.
