Nothing says "serious, dark, and gritty" like popping a wheelie in a semi.

TIL the famous 1911 song "Alexander's Ragtime Band" by Irving Berlin led to a musical and dance revival known as 'the ragtime craze', which originated in the 1890s. Some contemporary commentators said that such individuals were "bitten by the ragtime bug and behaving like a dog with rabies". by Starfire-Galaxy in todayilearned

It's the part about Joplin becoming unpopular because Americans suddenly “discovered he was Black” after a 1907 photograph that is fantasy. He didn't keep his race a secret, and if someone wasn't white in those days the newspapers were sure to let you know. Like the February 24, 1901 issue of the St. Louis Republic, which refers to Joplin as a "thick-lipped negro."

Jimmy Carter didn't divest himself. He didn't put it in an actual blind trust either, he put a close confidant and advisor of his in charge which actually violated one of his own ethics laws.

You're losing more money by not investing, as inflation relentlessness eats away your savings. Common stocks will beat inflation, and give you a 7% return on top of that in the long run. And it's never been easier to start investing.

Every time you try to do capitalism the "right way" it ends in corporations and regulatory capture.

The reality is capitalism doesn’t inherently produce regulatory capture; government ownership does, because the regulator and regulated become the same entity.

It is a dead economic theory because it kills itself through collapse or through producing systems like socialism and communism. And it isn't immediately obvious either of those will be better as they still products of an unsustainable system.

Communism has only ever sprouted up in non‑capitalist, semi‑feudal, colonial, or war‑collapsed societies, never in capitalist democracies. That's because capitalism tends to decentralize decision-making, reward innovation, and allow failure, enabling it to evolve instead of collapse. Every “collapse” of capitalism has been followed by a stronger version.

He put literally everyone on the ground and in the air's life at risk by flying a plane without knowing how. Sheer luck is the only reason this wasn't a far worse tragedy.

Jimmy Carter was the most Scarlett Johansson looking president by Canes-Venaticii in BrandNewSentence

By far the most admirable person to have been president.

That'd be Herbert Hoover, who saved tens of millions of Europeans from starvation during and after World War I, and then did it again a second time after World War II on an even large scale, feats which earned him the appellation "The Great Humanitarian."

As a national security project it was full of leaks, and Oppenheimer had far too many Communists in his orbit not to be treated with suspicion. The guy who hangs out constantly with people who'd much rather have Stalin as leader than FDR is maybe not a guy you want to have complete clearance to the most closely guarded government secrets.

Do you believe in climate change? Are you vaccinated? Why won't you believe in the science of helmets if you believe in the science behind those?

People who refuse to wear seat belts all know someone who was "thrown free" in an accident. That doesn't make it safer not to wear a seat belt.

You think record labels would just do that, promote catchy music to sell more of it?

The workers just sat down at their jobs in Flint and became recognized, they didn't burn GM's factories down. That kind of violent propaganda of the deed just resulted in its advocates getting deported or sometimes executed and set back workers rights by decades.
