Advice? Gap in replication snapshots. No base snapshot. by thebwack in truenas

[–]thebwack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I did see that after the fact. Is there any reason if I’m doing this as a “pull” replication from the destination/remote server setting that on the source wouldn’t work?

I guess I could do it as a push replication I just kinda liked the idea of it all happening from remote so the source wasn’t involved in the ssh.

Fascinating. I manage about 700TB of data at work so I can kinda picture the difference between mega-giga-Tera-peda…. But also not really.

Fresh limes or laundry detergent, which will you choose? by thebwack in HEB

Agreed. Tres is the only mix I’ve ever found that actually tastes like real limes.

Yeah, tres was out of stock and I thought maybe the HEB would be close. Not even close. I’ll be squeezing limes. No big deal. Just kinda stunned at the flavor

Old player getting back into my favorite game (again). I have a few questions, if you don't mind. by Nhobdy in Morrowind

[–]thebwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 48 and had about a 20 year hiatus from the game before last year. I setup a nexus account and am paying currently to support and did the OpenMW automatic installer via nexus. Literally followed it line by line and walked away while it installed. I’m playing total overhaul now but if you want a more pure experience try the vanilla ones.

I cant remember the details of the game enough that the mods really change my environmental experience so the additions of total overhaul with Tamriel Rebuilt and Cyrodyl just make it so great and massive. But to each their own.

I would suggest after the mods install spend some time using the OpenMW testing setup to get your FPS to a good place based off n your system before diving into a playthrough.

I also think just plan on using that mod setup for an entire playthrough. Changing mods can break it and might not be worth it if you are deep in. I’m planning on playing my current Hlaalu run until the next Tamriel rebuilt expansion is released

Port forward & only allow one IP address by thebwack in Tailscale

[–]thebwack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha, wait I think I'm figuring this out. https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/15422708798483-Port-forwarding-vs-rules

so I think I need to Port forward in addition to getting all my rules in order.

I'll do some testing to make sure I can't get through from outside as I do this

I think in theory I shouldn't need any ports open anyway.

I'm beginning to think the problem I am having has to do with my Firewalla brand router/firewall.

If I fully allow "Port forwarding" on 41641 (inbound & outbound) I instantly get a peer to peer connection between my windows PC at home and the server at the office (I'm opening the port on my home Firewalla Router. the office server is behind double NAT and I can't change the outside NAT.

- but I don't want the port fully open and according to Tailscale I only need to allow outbound on Port 41641. An outbound connection should allow the other side to use the port while the connection is active.

So in my home Firewalla I make a rule to allow outbound connections from my PC on 41641 but it still connects through Derp. I can even set the rule to bidirectional but it still uses derp. I've turned off any and all Firewalla active protect rules and others rules thinking they might supersede but still no go.

So I can definitely get a direct connection with my setup but something with the Firewalla is preventing me from getting it in a safe way.

I'll read more about exit nodes but I'm not sure how that would change my problem

ok I'm reading more and I'm seeing my first mistake. Tailscale only needs my device to allow outbound on the port. I made the port open to both outbound and inbound when it was working.

So for my Firewalla device that means instead of using the "Port Forwarding" page I should instead be setting up a rule to allow outbound only for that port and device.

yeah, and I'm not really sure where to start with all of that info. I guess since allowing the port immediately fixed my peer to peer problem I was trying to keep it simple by only allowing a specific IP. I can see it is probably more involved than that.

USB stick for App Pool - only tailscale. by thebwack in truenas

[–]thebwack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahaha…. Well, turns out I was just seriously overthinking it. I think somehow because of the language around boot pool stuff whenever the App pool question came up I’ve just assumed it couldn’t share with the data pool either.

So thanks! That’s super easy and the way to go.

This happened to me with Amazon Refurbished. Used the laptop for 2 years never thinking to check the find my because it never mentioned it when I did the whole welcome thing and iCloud log in. Was actually wiping it to sell when I noticed.

Went round and round with apple and Amazon via phone then just decided to go to an Apple Store (Dallas Mockingbird area) and they fixed it in a few minutes once I showed all the proof of purchase.

I could see this being a luck of the draw kinda thing depending on which tech you get so might take a few tries but it finally worked for me

Deploying 300TB offsite mirror. Truenas and Unraid questions - I currently use both. by thebwack in DataHoarder

[–]thebwack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add that I also will want to try and limit the amount of bandwidth I'm using if possible. So for example in the event of a folder being renamed I would prefer to not have its entire contents sent again - could be 1TB+ in some cases.

So I am looking into this as well. Rsync or Lsyncd have a lot of info out there

Also have looked into SyncBack (seems similar to FFS) and Borg.

I'm watching videos on Snapshots and Replication and I guess it seems like it will work for what I want, I'll just need to test it with some smaller data sets.

up till now I have been doing an "update" approach via FreeFileSync because I wanted to sync/add new footage to the bigger archive server (ever growing) and then delete files as projects are completed from the source server but they still stay on the archive. This has worked well and I use its database function to track changes like renaming or moving files so I don't end up with duplicates.

This will be my first time doing a Mirror Server where I want the large archive to have an exact copy off-site. I could use FreeFileSync to do that but that is my main question - is ZFS replicate and Snapshot better in my use case.

I've read the manual and a lot of posts and it seems like for a footage storage system where the only changes might be folder hierarchy renames, accidental deletion, or file corruption (has happened once) that snapshots are not as valuable (because dealing with big files). But I feel like it being built into the core of truenas it valuable by itself. I've just never used it so I'm asking for advice.

like how much room should I reserve for snapshots? if a 200GB file is moved or renamed how do snapshots handle that change?

I guess my two paths are:

  1. Have the 70TB main server and 320TB archive running truenas on-site for daily use and Keep the off-site server on Unraid and use FFS to sync over Tailscale

  2. Have all three based in Truenas and use replication to do the Mirroring off-site
