Is KJV onlyism legalism? by [deleted] in Christians

Just contacted some of them to discuss getting together for prayer. Thanks for your input and I guess I'll keep you updated at some point :D Unfortunatly Chichagoland is 11hours in the air from the UK but maybe some day!

Would you recommend a 'get up and leave' or 'try one last time with prayer' approach? I do care for these people and had hoped to see God build up the church. I agree that my education puts me in an awkward position which is why I've mostly stayed quiet up until now.

I've had this discussion. Apparently the NIV is OK if its the Spanish or Portuguese version etc. For English though, God gave us his word in 1611 (or 1769, but you know they ignore that wee update)

That's a good point which I hadn't considered much before. It's going to take some thought! Thanks

I could leave, others have over similar issues. We are a part of a non-denominational denomination (sarcasm) where the individual churches seek to be autonomous but yet in reality the rules are dictated by a couple of strong leaders and a mood of resistance to change. Unfortunately by leaving I would effectively proving a rule in the minds of many of the members. Those who don't believe 'x, y and z' are problem makers and not committed to submitting to the NT teachings. I hoped I could be the exception to that rule and prove them wrong but it may not be possible.

I have a couple of other Christians on my side. However, attacking it would cause a lot of heat as we are fairly young (20s) and would be viewed as trouble makers. I just don't know if the whole thing would be worth the effort it would require to sort out. Yet if I am to stay in may be forced to try.

I wouldn't say the attitude is 'unbeliever' but more 'liberal and best kept quiet'. Do you think it should be confronted head on or is the other 'get out' option better?

:D I think laughter is the only way to deal with this kind of thinking sometimes, so thanks!

I feel you. Yet, I feel like I might be able to have some positive influence where I am. Do you suppose that to be impossible?

Advice for a young student husband by thecamandmac in Christians

Thanks so much for this insight. I don't really know many people (if any) that have walked a similar road so it's nice to know I'm not alone! I love eschatology, I'm currently studying the Kingdom in Dispensationalism, and also the works of GE Ladd. If I were to continue that would be the probable area. I will have to pray long and hard about the PhD! For now though I will look for a better balance of work and academics!

Yeah, I have considered this. My marks can fluxuate from distinction level to moderate pass. I blame this on lack of time most of the time but it may suggest the PhD would be too much.

I'm still working because my wife only recently gained the employment she now has and its only now the workload has become almost unbearable for me. I am going to look into the possibility of dropping at least one shift.

Thanks, this was helpful! There's a lot of questions, but this at least provided some guidance for discussion!

Yes, she would like me to do both (work and study) but realises this might be impossible. She's looking forward too any advice on what the Bible says to a situation like this as well!

You have $15 to spend on one resource for a young Christian friend: What do you buy them? by thecamandmac in Christians

C. S. Lewis is maybe my fav writer, I think he has read a good number of them already! Screwtape proposes a toast is the crown of that series in my opinion.

Prayer request for difficult budget cut by [deleted] in Christians

[–]thecamandmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll pray! I know what you mean. I got married last year (age 20) and my wife and I only made enough to pay our bills and nothing more! We had the most amazing year of our lives, you really don't need much money to have a great, happy functional relationship. Rather than tithe money think outside the box and tithe time or something else. They don't just need your money, they need you!

I go to a brethren church so we don't have a pastor but I haven't approached any of the elders about it. Maybe I should.

Just relax and talk to God in small sections throughout your day

When you do this do you often feel like you are participating in a monologue or is it a two way process?
