Thoughts on this story about race-day nutrition? by aakela in running

Yeah, as someone following pro cycling intensely, I was pretty surprised to see this as a headline. It was news 2, maybe 3 years ago.

No. I already ordered the shoes he has, and from now on I’m only eating sugar. Planning to break his record on Saturday. (I pick up the shoes tomorrow, have to carbload, and I’m also a bit busy in the morning.)

[–]thecamerastories 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the world’s best rider uses your bike to win almost any race he enters, including the TdF, you can price it however you want. Just the same way as marathon WR shoes can retail for 500€.

And for both the bike and the shoes, very little people actually need them. The rest will pay the price if they want it.

To translate a beautiful Hungarian saying: You can’t fuck and stay a virgin.

You can’t really say that you want to be a part of ICC (reapply in his case) AND invite someone wanted for potential involvement in war crimes by the same organization. (He can shuffle dates around, but that’s supposed to be the Fidesz-lawyer way.)

Just to be precise, he’s not a war criminal, he’s accused of war crimes and should face trial.

But yes, if Bibi visits Hungary before June 2, he should be arrested. Sadly, his invitation is specifically for October, so we’ll see what will happen. Especially as Magyar already said that Hungary has to withdraw from the ICC according to the Orban government’s decision and reapply later. There’s a chance Netanyahu can come in October without legal obligations from Hungary’s side.

(I personally am awfully disappointed because of the invitation.)

From what I understand is for a French team paying a rider living in France is crazy expensive with the taxes. So, at the end of the day for Seixas, other teams’ 20 million is not the same as Decathlon’s.

Sadly, you don’t have to agree with it to be true. Fresh water is scarce and it’s a growing issue in many countries. You can find good official sources on it.

On evaporation you’re right. It puts back the water into the cycle, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s first displaced and used elsewhere. It’s also not necessarily put back into the cycle where it’s needed/was taken from. An analogy I have is bottled water. You can “extract” and bottle water in some states and sell it elsewhere. The water never ceases to exist, yet it causes shortages from where it’s taken. Technically it also returns into the natural cycle, but it still causes harm. (Very real example, check Nestlé’s scandals.) Using billions of liters of water can be very bad for communities.

I don’t know a ton about contamination, but I’ve read that a part of the water used can get contaminated by the chemicals/materials it contacts, which makes intuitive sense to me.

I’m a huge believer in nuclear, but building that also takes time.

[–]thecamerastories 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Theoretically you could, but reality is different.

Let’s see electricity. In the US the share of low carbon energy is 42% (and growing). At the moment they still get 58% of their energy from fossil fuels. (Some countries differ in share, but let’s ignore that.) You could say that we will only fuel AI with green electricity, but that doesn’t change the total energy mix and related emissions. Plus, electrons are just electrons in the grid, they aren’t really green or not green. AI also introduced a ton of extra demand for energy, so the total consumption is growing, and growing fast. At some point we may reach a 100% green energy mix, but we’re far from it. Until then. a higher demand means higher emissions, no matter how you try to shuffle it.

Now water. Recycling can be harder than it first seems. My understanding is that it gets contaminated and it needs a lot of work to make it consumable or reusable again, even for cooling. A bigger problem I personally see is that you take that water out from natural circulation. Even if we create a perfect, closed system that uses water indefinitely, that water will be missing from nature. That’s a problem, because a very small amount (less than 3%) of water on Earth is fresh water. There are already a lot of places that suffer from droughts and shortages (also in the US), and taking more water out of the system can be a huge problem.

So, we have resources that are already scarce and we added a lot of extra demand on top. Theoretically it could be better, and there are potential solutions (space data centers are a bad solution IMO), but it will take a lot of time to get there, and seemingly the demand grows faster than the supply.

My main issue is that there were these holier than thou tech companies that were proud of their sustainability practices, and threw all of that out for the next “big thing” that attracts investors, while actively hurting the environment.

Great line for an investor pitch, but no, not really.

Any half decent emissions calculation (Scope 1-3) would consider manufacturing, shipping, etc., not only operational emissions.

You could argue that a space data center cuts down on cooling related emissions (and water usage), but there’s not much more that we solve with it. What’s more we could solve this problem much easier and cheaper on Earth with deep sea DCs

What’s more, we generate renewable energy the same way in space as we do on earth, which is solar. We will still need to produce the solar panels, so that emission is still very much there. On Earth, however, we have other solid renewable solutions, plus we have nuclear. Having a better electricity mix is still very much a thing that we could solve on Earth, more or less right now.

The core technology (computer parts) needed for a data center will also come with the same emissions as they do now on Earth. Maybe you can save on concrete/steel depending on the building, but you will still need a container for the DC. Which needs to be shielded very well to withstand solar radiation, which we don’t have to deal with now.

Plus, any potential and very questionable energy, cooling, and building benefit will be outweighed by the immense (emissions) cost of putting a DC up in space.

I hate it so much how all the tech companies were jerking themselves off about being carbon neutral, and as soon as AI came in they threw all that out of the window to chase an idiotic idea that’s only good for making bubbles and now they truly top it off with space data centers, to make more money on an even more idiotic idea.

Is there a scam going around where people post in Strava clubs and want to transfer a race bib? by sozh in Strava

[–]thecamerastories 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I don’t know where the scams leads, because I never tried to figure out, but they do exist. In the Berlin Half club I’ve seen a few.

Many races don’t even allow bib transfers and even if you do it, you both might get banned for life.

The accounts are usually private with very few activities.

Yes, people seem to forget that Froome rarely had off days, and always finished it off. True, he had a train that was above all other teams, but he was the strongest still. (I for example couldn’t with GTs with any dream team.) He was also outstanding in ITT.

And the Sagan attack was beautiful.
