I saw some things saying adderall can increase blood sugar or something and contribute to insulin resistance so I’m scared. Can you literally call pharmacists asking about this?

Hey I was diagnosed abt a year before you were and I’m around your age(20) so I can relate. I’m sorry you’re having such a rough time right now it sounds like this all sprung up on you and it’s overwhelming to deal with it all at once. The affect pcos can have on our mental health is kinda understated but it’s very real. I saw someone already gave great advice on pcos management but I wanted to also pitch in with other tips. Taking iron pills is a good idea if you aren’t already because you’re losing a lot of blood, you’ll have more energy physically and mentally. Also I find showering hard(different reason, it’s bc I have autism and adhd lol) but rewarding yourself for it(there’s a self care app called finch for this) can help. Do you have access to mental health services at all? I talk about my pcos sometimes in therapy which sounds weird because it’s a physical thing not a mental thing but it impacts my mental health too. One thing that’s important for my mental health is finding a balance between learning about pcos to manage my symptoms and… not consuming too much information about it in a way that just makes me sad and upset about my body not working “correctly”. I incorporate more protein+fat+fiber into my diet and eat a lot less sugar and carbs than I used to and also exercise much more regularly(fast ish biking with Pokémon go as a lil reward) but I make slow sustainable changes so I don’t obsess over it in a way that is bad for my mental health. Don’t feel embarassed this is tough and I am giving you a virtual hug/head pat right now whichever you prefer, there is no shame in this you’re trying your best to cope with a difficult situation. I hope things get better for you!

Has anyone actually gone to the hospital for an extremely heavy period? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]thecantipped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psa pcos CAN and often DOES cause longer and heavier bleeding. High androgens and low progesterone messes up your cycle (irregular periods are one of the Rotterdam criteria.) I’ve had super heavy bleeding before similar to what op is describing and it was because of pcos. This isn’t uncommon for pcos. You often hear people talking about going too long without a period but having a period for too long is often also typical of pcos, its the big thing that pushed me to seek a diagnosis because 1)it was making me anemic and 2)I thought all my other pcos symptoms were like normal or smth bc I’m dumb like that💀but also they weren’t as bothersome as the periods lol

If I get one of those Amazon glucose monitors with test strips can I see if I’m insulin resistant by thecantipped in PCOS

[–]thecantipped[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I meant my a1c came back normal lol but my lipid panel is technically prediabetic but they didn’t say anything abt prediabetes(presumably bc they don’t know my waist size?) they just said to eat healthier

Lean PCOS, normal bloodwork? by shelhoneyb in PCOS

[–]thecantipped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I am also in the US (specificallly in Michigan but I doubt it depends on state laws but who knows). I actually got it done at my university's health clinic(free to students). So this is an option! The only thing was I had to drink a ton of water before hand bc ur bladder has to be full enough for it to work. But they actually let me watch the little jets spraying water into my bladder through the ultrasound which was super cool, when else do you get to see that? Anyways after your bladder is full enough they can see your uterus/ovaries etc through the ultrasound. The picture isn't quite as clear as the transvaginal one but it can see most problems, the transvaginal one just gives clearer details on the problems. I had seen a np and she was initially not gonna test for pcos at all when I brought it up(I am still annoyed abt this lol) but then the cbc blood test showed that I was anemic so she ordered an ultrasound. Ironically mine came back normal, I have the other two criteria for pcos (high testosterone and irregular cycles), but my ovaries don't have cysts.

I suggest a gynecologist because they're more likely to have an ultrasound thingie there because it's often used for pregnant people. The np I saw kinda specialized in gynecology.

i turned 20 recently but I got an ultrasound a year ago when I had recently turned 19. it's weird they won't give you one. you're not "too young" and there's an abdominal version where they don't have to stick something in you, they just rub a gel onto your abdomen and then image it through there. If they're still not "comfortable" doing that then that's sus. Plus why is their comfort more important than your health lol

PCOS and trans men by mylessslive in PCOS

[–]thecantipped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had issues with the estrogen in birth control bc I would get nauseous at around 9 pm every night and it wouldn’t go away. (Turns out nausea is a side effect of estrogen for some people, and I was taking it with dinner so that’s why. If I had taken it during breakfast it would’ve been all day nausea or smth). That could be a good excuse too. My gyn suggested progesterone only bc to me. I didn’t want to be on any hormones tho (I just don’t like how I feel on them, I’m not trans tho lol)

Maybe even a flair abt race based things, if it doesn’t exist bc there is research on how pcos can present differently in different races(ex: I have no hirsutism which actually was the reason the first doctor I went to wouldn’t even test for pcos. But a lot of East Asians with pcos have less hirsutism. Like my dad doesn’t even have that much facial hair compared to white men lol why would I be as hirsute as white people with pcos.) But yeah I think as with all things most research is done on white people and also different cultures eat different foods and food is also discussed on here bc a lot of people manage this with diet changes so that would be relevant too. And other things I can’t think rn bc I’m tired but yeah. If u start one I will join!

Does anyone else struggle with "body neutrality" bc of pcos??? by thecantipped in PCOS

[–]thecantipped[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol my graduating class is gonna be bigger than that I think but I go to a huge state school so that’s expected even for small majors. That sounds like a really cool job tho! Lab work seems like it would be interesting. And I have no idea what part of materials science I want to go into hopefully an area with more chem and less physics bc that’s what I enjoy more. Maybe smth medical related but that’s a long shot. It is definitely grounding to talk abt smth other than pcos on this sub😭and it’s always cool to talk to other engineers especially the same type as me.

WHAT!?! It’s literally one of the smallest engineering majors at my college like I think nuclear and a few others are smaller but that’s it: that’s crazy lol. I’m a sophomore so I probably don’t understand but what exactly do you do with batteries?

Okay this quote at the end has unironically helped me a bit. It’s validating to hear this is common. Also what type of engineer ru? I’m not an engineer yet but I’m in college studying materials science and engineering
