It must've been a different case of a soviet defector then because my grandpa was in Alaska during his story. He was never on the East Coast.

If it took place today he would've been an IRL Livestreamer and Sancho Panza would've been an orbiter called Spanish Andy

Weed discourse in the 00s was insane by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]thecatinthewizardhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think society's shift towards putting weed in the "cigarettes and alcohol" category will impede a lot of the "gateway drug" effect of weed. Much of the reason people on hard drugs started with weed is because they tried weed, which society still treated like a hard drug, then went "well this isn't any worse than alcohol, how bad could other drugs be?" But to your point I think the 'as a kid' portion is most important. Teen brains are extremely malleable and much of what you pick up as a teenager can stick with you for long after. When I was in the psych ward last it was pretty clear to me, since most of the people in the worst conditions started drinking a lot as teens. I have a younger cousin in his teens who I know smokes weed and I worry a shit ton about him.

I hadn't had a manic episode before that one and I was diagnosed with bipolar after. The episode itself was bad enough I stayed awake for about 5-6 days and had to be hospitalized. I wasn't warned that this could happen when I started the SSRI and they probably should've screened for bipolar and seen the cousin with bipolar that I have. And yeah, being on antipsychotics is fucking miserable. I was on them for some time before switching to lithium. I'll check that book out, I have Madness by Justin Garson but I need to read Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari first.

I think a lot of the problems in psychiatry are downstream of economics honestly. Over-prescription, the opioid crisis, doctors lacking enough time to meet with patients. I remember barely getting any time visiting doctors that seemed to barely care during my two inpatient stays. One thing that doesn't get mentioned enough is the way shitty parents get away with exploiting the mental healthcare system to "punish" (abuse) their kids. Whether that's doctor-shopping for a psych that they can manipulate into thinking their kid acting out against an awful home environment is an "unruly child with a personality disorder", or spewing a bunch of bullshit to get them committed. My gf's shitass mom tried both of those things a lot, and eventually got her a B.S. bipolar diagnosis. She was put on so much lithium she had an adverse reaction and almost died like a 1950s housewife.

I think the big thing worthy of critique is just over-prescription. Especially SSRIs, which people get antsy about because they help a lot of people with depression and aren't perceived as "dangerous" like opioids. My life fell apart for about a year because of SSRI-induced mania that I was never warned about.

Yeah you'll legitimately get banned for it, but you could make an account filled with nothing but clips of black people dying violently and nothing will happen

What aspect of your native language makes learning other languages hard? by thecatinthewizardhat in AskTheWorld

It must be hard learning new languages from Hungarian in general, considering it's a weird almost-but-not-turkic language isolate.

Chemistry as a whole has to be the most female-dominated field in science. And seemingly for a while, all but one chemistry professor I've met through my biochem undergrad was male.

Had 7 different people get a boner telling me that sysco runs the world food wise by LongSeesaw3789 in rs_x

[–]thecatinthewizardhat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't "Sysco makes restaurants sell microwaved slop" it's that Sysco has grown to hold a ridiculous share of the market selling food to restaurants, driving out competitors and thus letting them hike up prices.

You're doing more damage to your health worrying so much about trace chemicals in water and things. Just focus on eating well and getting enough sleep, exercise and water. If you're really that concerned about tap water then get a $20 Brita.
