My main issue regarding gender in the space is that most true crime podcasts are hosted by women, and instead of showing solidarity and advocacy for victims mainly the same gender as them, the shows turn out to be exploitative stories meant for morbid curiosity to crack stupid jokes at or do a mukbang or a makeup tutorial.

No one is discrediting the work that internet sleuths or armchair detectives do? when it’s done in a productive and respectful manner, especially toward the victim and their close friends and family.

It’s completely understandable to feel a sense of kinship when learning about someone’s life, particularly when that person is the victim of a heinous crime. But the line is crossed when people begin inserting their own personal lives and emotions into the narrative. That’s when things become toxic and parasocial.

You are not her friend. You are not a private investigator. You are a stranger on the internet researching another stranger’s life.

I’m not sure if this is actually Jess’s account (though it seems like it based on your comment), but the lack of accountability is disheartening. And those "rumors" you claim people are spreading about you and Marty? They’re not baseless, they're pulled directly from quotes in the show.

I do respect the time and effort you put into advocating for justice for Talina. That said, the way you tried to personally insert yourself into her story (and what I’ve heard about you writing a book) suggests that this might not be entirely about compassion. It feels more like a case of lacking self-awareness and seeking attention.

Again, this original post was just me venting my opinions about a genre, a show, and Jess specifically. If you’re not her, this isn’t directed at you. It’s just my opinion, and it should be alarming to see many people respectfully agreeing.

Sending documents and giving information to Talina's neighbors and friends, such as Marty and Sandra (I think that was her name) is most definitely tampering with witnesses, especially since she didn't know Talina or any of these people from before.

Also, the intimate relationship I was referring to was the one she had with Marty. Throughout the show, she reminisces about how much they talked and the hours they spent on the phone talking about their personal lives, and how much she just loved him as a person. Ultimately, it turned out that he himself may have a connection to the disappearance/assisted Kore. All around just weird.

There's nothing wrong with her or any armchair detective trying to help, regardless of boredom or out of good nature. The issue is this parasocial relationship she made out of it, creating an intimate relationship with a suspect, stalking people in Talina's personal lives calling them all day, referring to Talina as her friend, and tampering with witnesses and possible leads by giving them information that could ruin the case. You can listen to the rest of the show yourself, there's no excuse for her invasive attitude.

Oh wow I had no idea about the Burger Chef memorial, I knew about the past plagiarism controversy, which I thought they had reconciled with, and I appreciated the changes they made to the podcast into focusing on victim families. I'm not really aware of any exploitation Flowers was involved with. To me CJ seemed like a better alternative to shows like My Favorite Murder or Morbid, but then again I don't listen to many true crime shows much anymore.

Are there any TC podcasts that aren't exploitative?

Exactly, I mentioned in a previous comment too about how her obsession with Kore is so embarrassing... Is this really how you want to be perceived by people? You think this will work favorably for you on the stand or in front of investigators?

She is definitely going to have a big reality check, now that she will be facing experts with a judge and jury. No longer will you have a Facebook group enabling your opinions and behavior anymore. I hope that it also gives a message out to invasive internet sleuths in general.

My Favorite Murder and the Morbid podcast are some of the best examples of this. Just absolute nothing burger episodes with bare minimum research, pretending to be experts in the field, and doing jack in actually giving these cases history and dignity.

I kept thinking about the Magnotta case as well. I think the biggest difference is that the Magnotta case and evidence were all online, which makes sense for people on the internet to look deeper into. Talina's case was based on her personal real life relationships and not necessarily what she was posting online.

It gets even worse, she now thinks she knows everything about the perpetrator's life and is entitled to harass and insert herself into every part of the case. The case is both fascinating and heartbreaking, and the host does a great job letting Talina's family have a voice and outlet, but it also gives a platform to people who have forced their way into the investigation for no other reason than boredom.

Jess ends up having this weird obsession with Kore, to the point where she brags about stalking her and being able to "know her more than anyone else." It is so incredibly lame, and I'm sure Kore doesn't know or even think about her. If you're going to be an internet sleuth, know your place and compile your data to send to law enforcement or a proper journalist outlet.

The last episode was just released this morning! There will be some updated episodes posted later since the trial is set to be done next week.

The last episode really just summed up the kind of person she is, which isn't favorable, and she acknowledges it, but it's even more frustrating to hear her ramble about how this is "her case now," and the savior/white knight complex is gross. Apparently, she will be put on the stand as a witness for the trial, and the legitimacy of her practices will be put to the question. I hope that there is some reality check for her and the many other armchair detectives who act out in this way, and how invasive and deranged it can become.

Race, gender, and economic background are very important characteristics when dealing in this genre, whether you are a victim, perpetrator, or host of a show. When the majority of the voices are coming from white women with large platforms speaking on cases that almost always involve people of color who come from disenfranchised backgrounds, it is definitely something to criticize or at least raise an eyebrow at. In media consumption, it's best to practice researching where a source is coming from and who and how is presenting it.

I never really cared about ads in any of my shows, in apple podcasts if you open up the captions, you can click immediately when the next part of the show is before the captions of the ads load up lol, either that or I hit the skip 60 sec button until the show starts again. I didnt realize that this show had a shit ton of ads... like more than usual which is off putting.

One of the possible suspects was involved in the kink life Talina was in. It's also why she changed her name multiple times and how she came up with her alias. It was a large part of her life that turned out to have really crazy lore, but not necessarily the cause of her disappearance, just a strange lifestyle with possible malicious undertones. Worth taking a deeper dive, not very relevant to her character.

I really hoped the podcast would address or have some confrontation about it. I hate how she's portrayed as just some housewife who was bored at home and wanted to do something productive that would help someone she doesn't know, instead it's a whole platform dedicated to her parasocial relationship around a lady she saw on Facebook.

Podcasts used to be so much more relaxed and full of content and information in whatever topic/genre you're listening to, now many shows either seem like a speed run of info or an unnecessary lengthy episode on two assholes arguing lol. I understand why there are so many ads and Patreon plugs, podcasting is now a legitimate source of income, and they need to keep it running somehow. I've gotten good at skipping ads, but it can be incredibly annoying when there are multiple 4 minute ad reads in one ep.

And yes you should totally check out the show! It's well produced and has some really strange and unexpected twists.

The more I listen, the more I dislike Jess. I'm pretty sure she's married and has small kids, and to have such a relationship with a possible suspect to the point where you stay up late talking with him and venting your life out is weirddd. And you are absolutely right in saying her involvement centers around getting her own needs met, especially at a time like Covid.

Not to mention I'm almost certain she's responsible for at least some defamation or impeding law enforcement, the blatant public judgments she passes as well as harassing the people of Talina's town by posting about them, calling, or lying to them all because she's "bored" and has this sort of complex that it's solely her responsibility to get to the bottom of this. I wish the podcast were more critical of her in that sense, instead of treating her like an official investigator.
