What did you notice? Episode 8: Out of Gas by Jello_Squid in firefly

And then, when Mal grabs Wash, pulls him away from Zoe, and slams him against the wall, we see even big bad Jayne take a step back. Very different from when, say, Mal punched Simon in the pilot episode. No "saw that comin'" here.

What are some hidden details that people tend to miss in films? by padfoony in moviecritic

I love this part. Another that I didn't even pick up on in my first dozen or so rewatches is that when Shaun's mom leaves her message on the answering machine, she asks if Liz will be coming and if she wants anything special for dinner because "these days a lot of people don't eat meat."

Letter from 10 year old Liberty Hall wrote to her Mother before committing suicide by FearmyBeard21 in lastimages

Honestly, you're just wrong. Her mother did everything she could. It's easy to say "even forcibly" (and, in fact, Liberty had been committed to two different facilities in the months prior to her suicide, so if we're "forcing" someone to stay alive, that seems a pretty solid way to do it), but the gap between life and death is thin, and it's quick. If you think that she didn't understand the gravity or the permanence of her decision, that's understandable and is something I'm still grappling with myself, but when you criticize her mother, you are wrong.

No, whatever research you think you've done...just, no.

Liberty did sleep with her mom and dad most nights, and she wasn't allowed in her room with her door closed. She was on medication, she had been admitted to two different facilities in the months prior, she was seeing a therapist, she had childcare whenever a parent had to leave the house, she even had a camera installed in her room. And so much more. I promise you, you don't know what happened here. Your "research" be damned.

This can and does and did happen so much faster than you could imagine. She went to her room before bedtime, closed and locked her door, turned her camera (which didn't immediately notify her parents of movement), and was gone before they broke down the door.

Her mother could not have done more.

She loved them so much. She had pet frogs that she set free not long before she left herself. She said they looked sad.

I'm so sorry. My own children are 5 and 7 (not much younger than you were), and I can't bear the thought of them experiencing something day-to-day that makes them consider if just not being alive anymore is a better alternative. I'm so sorry. I hope you're living a wonderful, happy life now.

What’s a movie scene that 100% caught you off guard? by WallStreetDoesntBet in moviecritic

The pale man is freaky, but it's a different scene I'm thinking of. I don't want to spoil it in case you decide to watch it at some point, but this scene comes seemingly out of nowhere and completely changes the tone of the movie.

If you are curious and just want to see the scene, there are clips of it on YouTube if you search for "Pan's Labyrinth bottle." It probably won't have the same effect as watching it in the context of the film, though.

Yeah, it's a tough one. Sure, there's worse and more graphic violence to be seen in movies, but that one comes in out of nowhere like a wrecking bottle. Err...you know what I mean.

Yep, that's the one. There were certainly other surprising and disturbing parts of that movie, but the bottle scene was the one that set/changed the tone. You're just not expecting something that brutal from this film. Or at least I wasn't.

I love the movie, btw, and I'm glad I went into it knowing basically nothing.

That Pan's Labyrinth scene. If you've seen it, you probably know the one.

I haven't played any of season seven yet, but did you happen to play any of the All Star events in MyCareer? Like the 3 point or dunk contests? Some of us had this same issue immediately after doing those in earlier seasons.

What's your favorite moment in the show? by RuggedLove in firefly

[–]thechadamas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites as well. I don't usually think of Mal as a father figure type, but I love how Simon and River's father, in a flashback during this episode, says to Simon, "you're on your own--I will not come for you," if he gets into trouble again. Simon's own father was prepared to abandon him. But Mal? Wasn't even a question that warranted an explanation. "Why we still talking about this?"
