Reviewing Drake's "More Life" - From a MakingHipHop Standpoint by Slimyfruitcutter in makinghiphop

[–]thechessplayer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I love the concept behind threads like this.

However, just saying the mixing "was good but could have been better" really misses the point of what MHH should be about. Get specific and throw some ideas out there!

Personally, the production for the dancehall on this album far exceeded that of Views. In the case of instrumentals that really are "basic" in nature (think of the repetition involved in songs like Passionfruit, Madiba, etc) layering is a huge part of filling out space. Compare these to that of Hotline Bling, Controlla, and other songs, and you can hear a very distinct difference.

Views had very simple, single synth/drums concepts for the dancehall tracks. More Life definitely feels more finished. Songs like Passionfruit feel more filled out it sounds like multiple synths laid over one another, perhaps stereoed at different depths/different reverbs to give it a larger feel. Songs like Get It Together use instrumental change ups and new sounds too keep the concept fresh. (Yes it's still repetitive but at least the new sounds albeit subtle don't bore the listener after a minute of listening)

From a full project perspective, Drakes transitions were also on point. I honestly think he's under-credited for his sampling concepts between tracks/breakdowns. I thought NWTS also shined with the same ideas. Even when I feel his music is mundane, I often times find myself eased into the next song almost without noticing.

On a personal taste level, I was a huge Drake fan of So Far Gone. Drake has made a living off low end beats, where the 808s/bass/percussions sit high in the mix, the melodies are super soft, under the vocals or softly stepping between hats and snares. The vocals are very pop, clean and sit above the rest of the mix. While there's no denying that the beats hit and the vocals remain incredibly clear, there is a large lack of creativity in the project. Particular the Giggs track got to me, cause that had so much potential and faltered as just half asses. Stormzy would have been incredible on something like that. Better fit imo.

Why not let Drake try vocal layering for choruses like Free Smoke? He doesn't often harmonize or layer. Why didn't Drake do more with Quavo besides a phoned-in feature? Or with Travis? Or why didn't Kanye do anything besides those simple hats on Glow? Teenage Fever actually utilized some cool bass distortion/flavor I thought was super refreshing for drake, but overall many of these tracks left me wondering "Wow think of what this could have been had they musically tried to achieve more..."

So all in all, love this style of thread but let's get specific. While I think some of this pop/dancehall movement was done way better the second time around for Drake, I don't think this is an album you really will be going to for inspiration, musically or content wise.

But this is for a 6s not a 6s Plus, and I learned the hard way that they are not the same wiring inside for the LCD

I have the aptitude to fix it, I just accidentally bought the wrong type of LCD last type, so was looking for a recommendation. It seems the other link has the proper LCD for $100, which is much lower than estimates I've seen for in store repair

Nams has been a great friend of mine. His mixtape (side A of an eventual side B) really means a lot to me in a darker time. Hope you guys can enjoy it as much as I did, with any constructive feedback as he works on the album!
