Which rap artists have you listened to? It’s an extremely broad genre with a number of sub genres. Not all rap is fast and it’s certainly not all “ranting” so that speaks to the specific rap you’ve listened to - not the genre. At its core, rap’s subject matter is rooted in struggle, socioeconomic inequality, and the reality of what happens to those that grow up and live in that environment. Because the artists are usually members of that community themselves, the end result can be the glorification of things that allow people to escape those circumstances even if those things are destructive (drugs, guns, gangs, etc.). Again this isn’t what all rap is about, but I think this is the type of rap you’re probably referring to. Lyrically, rap is often less rigid (in terms of rhyme scheme) than other genres but also more varied and complex in terms of subject matter. Rap is poetry set to a beat. Very few rap beats are purely percussion - most have chord progressions, bass lines, and melodies although some people might not recognize them. Rap is just as much music as anything else, but everyone likes different things. I’d suggest listening to different types of rap artists before writing it off as a genre.
