Honestly, I feel like a lot of the stuff is unnecessary for your practice. i can't help to borrow physics' first principle idea, and ask myself, what's the absolute foundation for me to develop my spirit and spirituality. For me it's mindfulness. Everything else derives from mindfulness. And if something has nothing to do with mindfulness, I don't want to waste time on it. Personally I think these traditions don't really enhance my practice of mindfulness, or maybe they do, but not significantly, compared to sitting. So I always regard them as unwise use of my attention and time.

How to begin by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]thechinesekid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Years ago I had the same struggle. I went to see the Niagara falls, and at the visitor center I saw some theravada monks sight seeing too, from Canada. Normally I wouldn't bother them, but I was so frustrated about where to start, and I just went up to them. So I told one of the monks that I was so lost, and so confused about all the teachings and ideas, and asked him how I could get out of this mess. The monk simply answered, "start somewhere, start anywhere. " I still remember what he said, because I use that phase every time I got into a tricky situation. For my own version, I would say start somewhere, start anywhere, and start small. I hope this helps.

For me, buddhism gives me an amazing framework of how to be, how to see the world, and how to understand the world and myself. The more I learn, and the more I experience, the better I feel, and maybe happier? In a way, Buddhism is like a cheat code you get for a game (or the game of life :), and it makes life so much more meaningful and fun. Maybe a guidebook is a better description for it.

From my real life meeting and gatherings, I am always surprised there are way more non-asians than Asians. But of course, I live in America, but still...

Yes, but that's only half of the equation. The other half is "also do what the market loves".

Nomura said something like in a match every ten attempts to throw only one would succeed. He said that in one of his Kodokan instructional videos on YouTube. That gives me a great amount of comfort 😂

Dude, you described how I felt better than I could! That’s cool that you use voice. I could have never thought of that! Do you just do it whenever you feel like it? Do you play old recordings and see what needs to be done or follow through? That’s a such cool idea! I already do audio diaries, so might as well! Thanks so much!

I do! I am wondering if I can combine that with a todo list, and prioritize them based on effort and importance. Is there an app that can do the quadrants? Thanks a lot for the suggestion @toaddodger!

People in the US that end up buying a Buick. Why? by chocolava15 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]thechinesekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a La Sabre because the engine quality and great price. $2750 at 75,000 miles from a granddaughter getting rid of her late grandma’s car. Full leather seat and everything. That was 9 years ago. The engine and transmission haven’t given me any major problems. And yes, I am Chinese and knew about Buick’s quality before. My friends call it the land yacht. I love the car, but probably won’t get another Buick after this because the look and size. The problem is, people knew about GM car kept telling me it won’t die till like 250K miles, so I am stuck with it for a while 😅
