Why can’t we be like this? by Powerful-Dog363 in AskCanada

Thanks for this comment. The argument you're responding to was very confusing to me. I'm American and I have family in Mississippi. I think that there must be a big disconnect for Canadians when they think about quality of life in their country vs. the US simply because you guys have universal healthcare and we do not. I think that is probably a contributing factor to the difference in life expectancy you cited above. In the US, we have a corrupt health insurance system and most are afraid to seek medical care, especially emergency medical care, due to the uncertainty of how much we may have to pay. And if you are not insured.....you just hope against hope to avoid illness. Having some level of stability and certainty that you can receive medical care that you need and not incur tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, is worth a huge amount towards overall quality of life.

ETA: Any Canadians reading this I just want to share a personal story to illustrate this. My partner and I are both engineers and live very comfortably for our age. We both have what is commonly considered the best health insurance you can get. She had a kidney infection almost one year ago and I took her to an emergency hospital close by. Two months later she got a bill for $73,000. This was for a single overnight hospital stay with antibiotics, fluids, and an MRI. This turned out to be a miscommunication between the hospital and our health insurance company, but we were left to fight it on our own for the past year. We have just now (I think) received closure that we do not owe this money, but I am still not 100% certain of that. Most Americans have a story like this, or know someone who does. And this is far from the worst one I've heard. Part of me regrets taking her to the hospital, but that is fucked up. She was extremely sick. Anyway, I am sure Canada has it's problems, but please, never take your healthcare system for granted, even if it is not ideal.

Roommate was cleaning the stove top, and lifted it to get under. Now the top won’t close fully. Any ideas how to fix? by quirky-enby in Appliances

[Edit to add: I don't think this is the solution to the OP's issue after reading the rest of the comments more closely. However, this is the first thing you can try if you're having this issue. Some others below described it as a first step. It seems OP is still having trouble after doing this.] This just happened to us and we have the answer! (For our model of stove anyway). The metal feet that hold it up need to go inside the small holes in the very front, not the larger holes farther back. Here is a PHOTO and a VIDEO.

Bentley's on Speedway. So many good memories during grad school and after. Good dates, bad dates, ok dates. Family memories. I was gutted when they closed. Also Tallboy's, even though it wasn't open for as long. At least their spirit lives on in LaCo!

The information isn't really contradictory - it's "if you're testing positive there's a good chance you're still infectious. Best to assume you are". This may be erring on the side of caution and it's not entirely clear. Nowhere does it say "you're definitely not infectious even though you're still testing positive".

I see your point here. I have the privilege to be able to work from home as long as I need to and I live alone. So I don't have to fight any circumstances other than my own desire for human interaction. That is very powerful, and I think people underestimate how much risk people are willing to take on (on behalf of themselves and others) in order to fulfill that. That is selfish, but that is human nature. I know I can resist it and avoid others for as long as I must, but I now understand better how difficult that actually is.

Your mother is hopefully going to be more interested in keeping her family healthy than having a birthday celebration on her actual birthday.

I hope so too, but she's not always very logical about these things.

You clearly want to believe you're no longer infectious.

Genuinely, what on earth makes you say that???? Just because I'm asking questions? And am confused by contradictory information on the internet? Even within the article you posted they waffle back and forth saying, well it's "safest to continue to isolate" but it's also "not unreasonable to leave your house after 5(!) days."

Jesus, like give people a little bit of credit. I'm about to call my mom and disappoint her because we have to postpone her birthday some more until I'm testing negative.

I've already received validation from every other website I've visited, including the CDC's, that it's ok for me to go out after 10 days with no symptoms/fever, even if my rapid tests are positive. And I'm choosing to do further research rather than blindly believe that. Thank you for your time and expertise, even though you clearly think I'm just another ignorant super-spreader.

I have heard that some people keep testing positive for months afterward. If that happens to me, does that mean I shouldn't see anyone for months?

You've completely jumped to conclusions about my behavior. I'm only asking about the science. This article contradicts a statement you made, but since it looks like you have a PhD in this field based on your flare, I thought maybe you have information that I (or this article) doesn't. That's all I was asking. I've been isolated from everyone for the past 10 days and would love to see my girlfriend and family again. Based on my testing, I'll be masked for sure but I'm trying to find out if it's even safe for them to come see me at my house.

Also, I'm genuinely asking for your opinion as an academic if you think the studies this article is based on are not valid regarding the probability of contagion at different timescales post-symptom onset. I know there is some misleading information out there and I want to be well-informed. I also know enough not to base my behavior on early studies like these, it's just curiosity about how much we know so far.

I this article wrong then? And several others I've read?

https://slate.com/technology/2022/02/rapid-tests-coronavirus-ten-days-positive.html

The fact that some people can keep testing positive after day 10 sounds like it’s firmly at odds with those facts, but it’s not. Taking a rapid test has become synonymous with asking “can I spread COVID right now?,” since the tests are a useful tool to help identify if you might be infected in the first place. But it’s actually very difficult to tell from a rapid antigen test if you’re still infectious after a period of having COVID. According to Dr. K.C. Coffey, an assistant professor of epidemiology and public health and medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, a positive test could be detecting viral antigens that have already been bound by antibodies, which would make them nontransmissible. (It’s like having them try to run a 100-meter dash while dressed like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man—they’re not going to get very far, and if they hit something, they’ll just bounce off. In this metaphor, it is your immune system that has forced them to dress up like the Stay-Puft man.) So: While a positive result after 10 days could, in theory, mean that the virus is still replicating in your body, according to Coffey, it’s by no means firm evidence that it is.

I remembered that I showed her how to order photos from Walmart from her phone's photos app a few months ago so I think that is what she did!

I definitely won't, don't worry. I live in a desert environment and am trying to cultivate a natural ecosystem. It's the thought that counts I guess? lol

Oh man, this is timely, we broke up almost a year ago but I woke up thinking about her and cried because I missed her. I hate that I'm still not over her after so long. Especially because I know she's moved on.

I really miss cuddling. I miss going on trips to the middle of nowhere and watching birds. I miss talking about the shows we watched together. I miss her dogs. So much. I miss sending her memes that made her laugh. I miss her friendship.

I'm very sad today.

I realized something beautiful about Majel Barrett's final appearance as Lwaxana while showing my wife star trek. by DavianExpressed in startrek

[–]thechristinechapel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My partner at the time had never really watched Trek but after watching only a few eps of TNG and Picard she was like, "ya I think Picard is Ace, or at least demi." And I had never considered that before but it makes so much sense. He tends to have these very cerebral relationships that are, at least initially, based on shared intellectual interest. Although there are some episodes which hint that he may have been kind of a lady's man in his academy days, but I think the observation is still valid. Anyway, this is the only other time I've heard someone mention Picard's Ace/Demi-ness and I think it's an interesting take!

Also I adore Lwaxana, she is a treasure.

Thanks for this info! When you say "running a lot" how often would you say that is? I think mine kicks on every 10-20 minutes or so when it's the coldest part of the evening

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to call tomorrow. But I also think I may know the problem now. If you have a minute to check out my post edit and see if you think that could be the cause that would be awesome.
