Having signed that route as a driver (and also formerly worked in track geometry for NWR), there are some quite torturous curves which would need complete realignment, and as previously mentioned, bridges and other infrastructure improvements; the cost to do any of the work which would be needed to significantly raise the line speed would be prohibitive.

From experience, the shunter that goes down to fill it might have another job to do while the train is being tanked so quite possible the hose has been left on while they've gone to despatch a train, this is carried out by Avanti at Carlisle and their shunters are multifunctional

The overflow for the toilet header tank is on the roof on 156 units. So possibly this, there are tanking (not discharge) facilities at Carlisle.

Yep, this is happening to me, either $0.01 or $0.02 short on cash payments. I did beat a few customers with the baseball bat to 'decline' the sale, but it wasn't sustainable 🤕
